I had originally posted this in off topic and realized it was not the place3 for this thread. I am in process of building a '89 325i with a '93ish m42. Lots of various mods being incorporated as well. I will be building it to run in what I believe will be F-mod in the BMWCCA. After some extensive floor rot repair I am assembling the motor and after veiwing this site for only a short time I have found it quite informative. Lots of little bits of info and link to technical data.
BTW. m42 parts are sooo inexpensive!!

Ok, back to the business at hand.
The car has a pretty descent cage. Fiberglass m3 wide body fender and not a whole lot else at this point! More to come.
I am just introducing myself and looking forward to catching more information as it comes along on this site.

I plan on keeping the build very inexpensive as funds are quite low. Probably lower than they should be!
I have a well built head with valve work, upgraded springs, cams, porting and a new ecu with a tuned upgrade chip. I think I have 24# injectors for it as well?? So the top end is in wonderful condition. I would like "COP". I can easily get my hands on the coils I just need to fab up the adapter.
As for the lower end... A rod bearing failed and caused the crank to weld itself to the rod. I have another complete engine for doner parts. Excellent block and crank! Probably used only a few times before he overheated it and gave up on the project. I do not need the head at this point so I am not to concerned about it's condition.
I have a couple sets of super sprint headers to use and pending sound restrictions at certain tracks I would like as little exhaust as possible, while still keeping backpressure to the motor. Hopefully side exit exhaust. If I can get a fuel cell to mount in the trunk for cheap. We'll see.
I am going to end up keeping most of the lower end stock as I can not put too much money into it and I can't stroke it because it will bump me up another class. Same for the "FI". So little things are on my list.

So here is a little update as so where I stand. I am waiting for a few gaskets and piston rings and hopefully everything will be back together this week.;)

I hate to admit it, but I had to put a little silver on the block. I had no idea it was almost chrome!

If you really want to coat it right check out the Thermal Dispercent Coating on this site.

It's pretty pricey, but it makes a significant difference on intake air temps.
They look descent too. They clean up the parts quite well before coating, so you may not need to purchase a new manifold. It's worth a call.

I was fortunate to get this car already caged. I am happy with the fact that it was well built. I still have to gusset a few parts of the cage to the body, but it was a great help having this already taken care of.

Looks like fun build, but sad that the body scelecton is so rottend..lot's of late night hours on welding it. But hope that you end up whit a solid car, i'm sure you will. This cage is awsome, and front strut too...

The cams are stock out of a newer model, new retainers, new valves, valve job, decked and ported. Everything is in somewhat stock form. Everthing is also going to be polished.
I would invest more money and time if I had both. Low budget and an event august 8th. This is the first time I've built one of these bad boys. I am learning there is alot of little tricks that make a difference. Maybe if I do this again I will do it up a crazier!

The lower end is basically stock. The pistons have been lightened and balanced. Polished parts again. Crank scraper once I get the chance to fab one up.
Suspension...
i had bilstein coilovers for the front. It is getting converted to an e36 subframe and components. The rear will be e30 m3 setup. no coilovers in the rear, but will have adjustable ride height. Adjusters from an e36 rear control arm I will have to do some tricky fab work for this one. The rear trailing arms have been braced and have sweet bushings! Well built rear sub section. I don't have sways yet. I don't know how I am going to set these up yet.

I decided to stay with the chromoly flywheel strickly because of the high cost of aluminum. I wish the clutch was lighter, but oh well... At least it will eventually wear out!

So this last weekend with the holiday didn't produce alot of extra time for me to work on the motor. I was only able to work on sunday. I couldn't build the motor during the week as I was waiting for piston rings that I received on Thursday. So here is where I am right now.

I will be purchasing an e30 with a guy i work with who wants the motor and such. I will try to get as much hardware as I can to complete my incomplete body.

Just picked up m3 front fenders and a carbon fiber hood last thursday. It needs a little bit of repair, but it is pretty light!!:cool:

Everything is in used/crashed condition, so I have some repair work to do

I picked up a doner car cheap for all the parts I am going to need to complete the build. SWEET!! It's kindof a shame that I am stripping this down the car is in pretty good shape.

I tried to install the motor and realized that the e36 pan and subframe pushed the motor too far back and I didn't have enought time to reconstruct the firewall.

I AM dying to get it done! It won't look perfect for this year. I will just rattle can the non red parts for now so it isn't too much of an eyesore. You know rustolium brilliandrot! All the final finish on the body work and flat black paint will come over the winter. It should look SICK once finally painted.

I love the cage too! If it weren't for it I never would have built this perticular car. The cage made it worth it.

wow, great project! What happened with the e36 subframe in the end? did the engine fit in the position further back in the bay? what other problems did you come across? box? linkage? exhaust?

I hate the look of the wing, but I needed the down force, it only weighs 6 lbs and it was already on the car.

Id like to know about the e36 subframe too. Did it just bolt straight in? Moving the engine back might be a good thing for me, I'll be building a race car very shortly too :)
