1st gear problem

when im in first gear shouldnt the mph go up? even when i'm above 4k rpm it doesnt seem to move at all until i go to second gear.

so your moving but the speedo doesn't work? what speed does it show when your in second gear?

My car used to do that, in torrential rain with worn out tires. But seriously, be a bit more specific and perhaps someone can help.
