ok..my m42 has around 135k on it (odometer quit on me at 122952)
but anyways..
you can hear the "ticking" of the lifters pretty well, i'm getting to where im scared to whine it out in the lower gears.
i can't really afford a rebuild (16 yr old budget)

is my motor just waiting to blow?:confused::confused:

help!

if its just the lifters its not a huge deal. run a detergent through on your next oil change (you add it just before doing the change, run the motor until its warm, and then drain the oil.)

then get some elf or mobile one or another high end synthetic oil and run that.

I had the same problem and this fixed it, its been about 3 years. I still occasionally get it, but its mostly gone.

LOL!

As mentioned they make a oil additive that has detergents in it to clean the inside of the engine.

An old school trick that I have seen work really well is to drain about a qt of oil and add a quart of Diesel fuel. Do not drive or rev the engine just let it sit at a fast idle until at full operating temperature, about 10-20 minutes. Then drain the oil and run a high quality oil.

or you could just run diesel oil, it has many more detergents in it the regular oil. just make sure to get the non foaming stuff.

But yes, i was referring to an oil detergent. for the 5$ more i would run something reputable rather then using diesel fuel though. I'm sure works fine, but its better safe then sorry.

I use Mobil1 15w-50. The m20 crowd likes using 20w-50, but I think it's too thick for the m42. I believe tjts uses rotella 5w-40. Their site states it's a good equivalent for 15w-40. I'm going to try it out on my next oil change.
