View Full Version : What is this connector and why is it flopping around?

It's the connector just to the right of the filter in this picture... it's kinda just flopping around. What does it do and should it be mounted more firmly?

interestin...i don't know the answer as to what it is, but I think that as long as it stays connected then you are ok. i would probably mount it a little more firmly just to add some peace of mind that it won't like randomly come apart and end up being something really crucial that can cause bad damage while the car is running. ya just never know.

There doesn't seem to be any place for it to mount more securely.. and there isn't much play in the wiring... but it just sits there looking out of place.

try a zip tie to anything nearbye, that's always the cheapest route to custom mounting, i know i've done it plenty of times. at least its a +1 from duck tape!

I remember I have a loose connector somewhere on one of my cars too. THe works just fine so I can't be bothered tho :p
Next time I am under there I'll take a look and see if I can trace it on the other car.

We wouldda known something was up for sure if those were disconnected. The cars run just fine with that disconnected (at least I can vouch for mine running 100%)

Car works just fine. Next time I disassemble the intake manifold (if ever at all) I'll take a look and see. It's just not worth it now.

There are two connectors that plug in there (if that is indeed what I'm looking for. One wraps around the front of the engine timing case and goes to the cam position sensor, while the other goes all the way down and in front of the motor as a crank sensor of some sort.

These are both driven (I believe) by magnets, so rarely ever fail. Just make sure they are connected where they need to be.

I can't tell if it's connected in the picture. The two should plug in parallel to eachother.

I was not disputing the function of the sensors.

Anyone who has replaced a water pump or thermostat will see the cam sensor wiring. The crank sensor wiring and function is pretty visible. The fact they are magnetic sensors doesn't mean they can't go bad or need to be cleaned. Most often it's a case of the wiring or shroud getting ripped or exposed and/or having a short in it.

In my case, I was stating that the car functions normally but I have a loose wire connect like that under my intake manifold.

which would not be the crank or cam sensor.
