How should the heater hoses be hooked up on a 1991 318is? There is a line out from the back of the head and also a line from the heater connections to the plastic manifold. Which hose is attached to the upper connection to the heater core through the firewall and which to the lower?

Id like to know this as well. Anyone have pictures of how these are hooked up and possibly the lower hose on the radiator?

The lower nipple on the firewall is the heater core INLET. The other end of the hose attaches to back of the head. This hose carries HOT coolant away from the engine.

The upper nipple on the firewall is the heater core OUTLET. The other end of the hose attaches to the plastic water pipe. This hose retuns COLD coolant back to the engine.

could you draw and explain it , because i can not understand what exactly you say....
yesterday i had to rip off half engine to change the plastic tube coming out of the block , and has 3 hoses attached to it , one hose was brocken and was leaking water...
i want to know exactly wht it does , because i may cancel it all..
thank you...

Here's an alternate view of the same 2 hoses.

bmwpower, the second diagram you posted is for a Canadian non-A/C car. This one should be closer to a US car:
