Will an M42 bolt up to an E30 M3 transmission?
I believe the E30 M3 uses the Getrag 265.
Does anyone have any experience with that transmission?
Thanks

I do not believe so, but I don't know.
However I do know for a fact that a e30 m3 with an m42 would be awesome, kinda

Big chances it would work. Check the gearbox driveshaft to see if the m42 clutch disc fits. ;)

Eu-spec E30 M3 had dog-leg gearbox, us-spec had H-pattern.
The ratios are as follows:
European-spec: 3.72 (1), 2.40 (2), 1.77 (3), 1.26 (4), 1.00 (5)
North American-spec: 3.83 (1), 2.20 (2), 1.40 (3), 1.00 (4), 0.81 (5)
Together with the 318is gearbox they all belong to the Getrag 265 "family".
I believe they are all interchangable. In the FIA homologation form for e30 318is, the eu-spec M3-gearbox is also mentioned as an option.

No they are not interchangeble. Unfortunately :( because I'd love a close ratio gearbox in my "is".
S14 engine (M3 E30) uses the same bolt pattern for the transmission as the M10, M30, S38 etc... and the M42 has the same bolt pattern as M20, M50, S50 etc.
Edit: The M20 has the same bolt pattern but the engine actually has a different angle, so if anyone are planning on using such a gearbox, they'll need to modify the gearbox mounting and maybe even the linkage.

That's interesting, since I know about people using 318is with M3 gearbox. I'll try to find out something...

OK, so I did some research and here is what I came up with:
318is has Getrag 240 with integrated bellhousing.
M3 has Getrag 265 Sport with separeted bellhousing.
In order to connect the M42 with M3-gearbox, you can swap the bellhousing from an e28 Getrag 265.

Hi
Have a box M3 on my 318is M42 and last week I made the installation of a box E36 318is on E30 M42 to a friend I will explain below.
Ownership of 318is M42 draw you like a little shorter this is the solution.
It is a box 316/318 i. TI is E36 = type box S5D 250G AJR
The reports boxes are:
318is E30
1 = 3.71 / 2 = 2.01 / 3 = 1.31 / 4 = 1.00 / 5 = 0.80
318/316 I. Is. E36
1 = 4.23 / 2 = 2.52 / 3 = 1.66 / 4 = 1.22 / 5 = 1.00
M3 E30
1 = 3.72 / 2 = 2.40 / 3 = 1.77 / 4 = 1.26 / 5 = 1.00
As you can see the report E36 is not far from a much cheaper M3.et

We must extend the driveshaft playing on the setting, keep the support of box E30, the purging of the hydraulic clutch and go.
And the trick of the day, for the bolt is still ch ... Behind the starter, cut an old sheet, which is located between the engine and box, the part of the starter, making a half-moon weld nuts starter, establish the starter, the half moon slipping below par, setting the bolt easy in the positioning so that he is in front and put the bolt difficult that becomes easy, and tighten.

Hi
These photographs of assembling the box M3 E30 on M42, he had to move lambda probe and change the bellhousing in a special to be found in Europe for the price of 650 euros in a preparer french
http://www.delagesport.com/index2.html
And put the driveshaft M 3.

do you have a picture of the bellhousing that mates to m42?

Ok I maybe stand corrected ;) but in order for this to work the E28 gearbox must come from a 525e or 524td, and I'm fairly sure that none of those had a separate bellhousing.
Are you sure that the is you know about isn't in fact using the M3 gearbox from an E36? Because that one fits onto the engine perfect, I know because I have one in my is ;) (The pilot bearing needs to be changed if your M42 comes from a E30)

Strypt, it seems that once again you are right and I am wrong :o
Really sorry for the mess.
It's confusing, since I am sure that in Poland there is at least one rally e30 318is using E30 M3 gearbox. At least that's what the owner claims, but I don't have any contact with him.
Moreover when you look in the FIA homologation form for e30 318is you find that the dog-leg e30 m3 gearbox is an option, so it seems there is some possiblity to make it work.

I think that he either has manufactured a special bellhousing himself (cut'n'weld) or he is in fact using the Getrag 245 'sport' gearbox. It's also a dogleg g-box and was an option on 323 E21 and has similar (same?) ratio as M3 E30 Getrag 265 but with the M20 bolt pattern. It's not as strong as the getrag 265 but if you have a standard M42 it's no problem ;) I also believe this is the gearbox mentioned in your FIA papers.

Maybe you are right and he fabricated a bellhousing himself.
