OSRAM for dummies

Hi everyone,

Ok, quick bio:

1991 318i :) :) :)
1997 M3/4/5 :D

My 318 has smilleys and H1 OSRAM's in the low beams. Part number 64150SVS.

I just picked up a set of euro ellipsoid lights for the M3, and noticed the bulbs are the same (H1 OSRAM)

Here are my questions:
1) Where can I purchase these same OSRAM's?
2) Are these H1's only for low-beams? Or do OSRAM H1's also go in the high beams?
3) I assume the OSRAM's are not DOT approved, correct?

OSRAM is just a brand, and yes euro ellips have H1's for lows and highs. You can try to get some off ebay or something.

I got my Osram bulbs from www.powerbulbs.co.uk They ship to the US.

hey... a long time ago, I used to sell lightbulbs (non automotive, sadly) ...but, generally speaking, it's the fixture (the projector, reflector, lense, wiring assembly + OEM bulb) that's dot approved.

so, yer pretty much all set if you stick with h1 bulbs... in your m3;
the ellipsoid fixtures in the E30 are E1 approved (european) but not DOT, even with the same h1 bulbs

anyway... you want osram silverstar H1s...

I got my Osram bulbs from www.powerbulbs.co.uk They ship to the US.

From what I've read in the UK Osram Silver Star are the bulbs of choice for the best illumination, or if you want a whiter light though not quite as bright then go for Philips Blue Vision (which is what I have at the mo)

Sylvania Silverstars are Osram's..

I just picked up some Sylvania Silverstar H1's and the bulb's say "Osram Germany" on them. Just thought Id let it be known cause I ran across this thread when I was looking for ellipsoid data..

their $19.99 a pop.. Im only doing my head lights, I rarely use my brights so why spend the extra $$..

Yes and no. The European Silverstars will have the part # above indicated with a suffix of "SVS". If it doesn't have this, then they are not Euro Silverstars. Walmart sells Osrams for $5 each for the H1 bulb. They don't have the "SVS" indicator. I have bought these and measured them side by side to my Euro Silverstars and definitely is different. Just remember there is US Silverstars and Euro Silverstars which are vastly different.

Yes, that is correct but I was just trying to point out the difference between the US Osram and the Euro Osram that is often marketed over there as "Silverstars" since they both are clear and say Osram on them with the same part # except one having the "SVS" suffix designation. The "SVS" are the ones that have the brighter (and whiter) output and better filament technology over the regular US Osrams.
