View Full Version : Denis (dude8383) is an UNGRATEFUL TRAITOR

Febi Guibo

Well, it all started saturday when Denis (dude8383) said he needed me to drive to (friggin) Stamford, CT to help him pick something up...

We got back to my house in Long Island with this:

http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0808.jpg

Note this is not a Ford Ranger M50 rear engine conversion project.... more pics:

http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0809.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0810.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0811.jpg

Anyway, Denis decided he wanted to get low mileage M50 for like, $750, including ALL the accessories, the ECU, *and* a GM automatic transmission/giant paperweight.

Meanwhile, because *I* am not an ungrateful traitor, I recently picked up a non-running 1991 318i (sedan) that will become... the Guibo family truckster. Mrs. Guibo has agreed to learn how to drive stick, and since it's a white car... I'm doing a roller job on it this spring...

http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0812.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0813.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0814.jpg

It's a nice car, not perfect, but for $700 (the armrest alone is worth $150) it means I can keep my cache of E30 parts and stay in the M42 game... whoever owned the car had some issue with the motor, and it was non running... otherwise it has a perfect non-sport interior, a 3.91 LSD and a couple of minor exterior dingys (dents, not rowboats)...

note, the muffler tip literally reads "The Fast and the Furious" or something...

So at the same time... I am glacially prepping a dome light restoration for the 1971 BMW 1600 I picked up:

http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0815.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0816.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0817.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0818.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0819.jpg

don't subject your F5 key to excess wear looking for progress on this very rusty 1600... it's going to take a long long time...

Anyway, so the first step was pulling the non-running M42 out of the 4-door... this will give me a chance to wash down the engine bay and deal with some minor issues.

For an ungrateful traitor, Denis was instrumental in yanking the M42 out.

http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0820.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0821.jpg
http://ee1394.com/bmw/fotomat/071223/DSC_0822.jpg

So, net net, big changes at the Guibo household... Long story short, I am basically trading cars with Denis, stuffing my Metric Mechanic engine (and as much E30 everything as I can) into the BMW 1600, putting denis' M42 into the white 318i... and... then parting out whatever odds and ends are left from Denis' old pink E30.

Denis will be stuffing a 1995 M50 into my Diamondschwartz E30 chassis.

A tough choice, but really, I need to focus on the 1600 (god willing, it will be a fairly balls-out, no-compromises build), and I need an M42 to drive in the interim.

Denis apparently feels that a 24-valve swap will help his online E30 cred or something... well, now's your big chance to let him know what a terrible mistake he's making! :)

Dang, denis is going to need a new sig for the first time in about a hundred years ;). I really hope that the m50 is getting a stick, and that ranger would be pretty awesome with an m50 in the back and an andependant rear from a mustang cobra or something. Sounds like fun :)

12-24-2007, 12:11 AM
HAHAHA, very funny!!

Sam has come to terms with the m50 though :)

That M42 came out like butta, really happy with the progress thus far.

As for me, I need to source a tranny, driveshaft and some other odds and ends to get ready for the swap.

Gearhead, yes, I will be changing my sig just in time for the New Year!!!

I am thoroughly excited though, I can't wait to shoehorn that bad boy in there :)

Man, you guys in NY are not afraid to get your hands dirty (or tackle multiple complicated projects at the same time!).

Looking at this makes me wistful, though. I had to make a concession for recently purchasing my 318is by selling my much loved 72 2002 a couple of weeks ago. That 1600 stuffed full of M42 should go a long way toward providing the best of both worlds. If you have not done so already, start picking Matt McGinn's (of Sports and GT Restorations in Conn.) brain about 02s. I don't think there is anyone else on the planet more knowledgeable about bodywork for these cars.

Keep this thread alive. I wanna see more M50, 1600 and 318i progress in the new year.

woah, you've been busy! It'll be sad to pull that MM engine out of the black e30 :( Nonetheless, I'm sure this'll keep things interesting, and no doubt the black e30 will be (nearly) as cool with the M50 in it, and the 1600 fantastic with the MM engine in it.
24v e30s are pretty special, we get alloy block M52B28s over here which are pretty difficult to ignore :)
The white 4 dr looks cool, I like 4dr e30s!

Nice projects you guys have going on for the new year. Keep this thread alive with updates.

Glad to hear Mrs. Guibo is going to be an m42 driver.:D

Denis, how did you get your basketweaves to look like that. They look awesome BTW. Good luck with the swap too.
Dan.

Thank you all for the comments!!

We will make sure to keep the thread updated whenever something new happens.

As for the basketweaves, they're 16 x 7.5 ACT's...I can't wait to see how they'll look on the dschwarz car!

As a side note, I have three daughters and a female niece that I taught how to drive with a standard trasnsmission. I was explaining the feel of the clutch was an intuitive thing and made the mistake of saying that the female was supposed to be the more intuitive of the sexes. I then said that, "Too bad a clutch isn't like hair, you would have been born knowing how to drive standard." To this day they still say that to me whenever I demonstrate something like a lack of fashion consciousness or the inability to pick up after myself.
"Yeah, Dad if hair was a clutch...."
Speaking of intuition, I think I know what a "domelight" restoration is. I had a 1971 Nissan 240Z restoration that went on so long that my wife began calling it "The alleged Z-car". Good luck with the organ transplants.

Hehe, well hopefully Sam's 02 won't turn into the "The alleged 02-car" :)

I will be parting out w/e isn't going into Sam's car.

I will compile a list of stuff that I have now so that I can recoup some of the cost of this swap.

Thinking maybe sometime next year we should try and get a get together for M42club someplace between us.

Finally dropped of the block and M52 crank at the machine shop.

Bought this:

Why did Sam decide to put the s42 into the Weiss 4door, I thought it was going into the 1600??? Preston

Ok, first I want to say that this isn't an S42 motor!

If Sam ever log's in to check the thread, I think it goes something like this:

He's over the mod scene and wanted a 4-door commuter car, just a dead reliable sedan to get him around.

The motor in MY car will go into the 1600 and will most likely receive a supercharger!

Really? Are you sure it was me? I'm not quite sure I remember selling a steering joint! But if any of guys are curious I do have great feedback! I have a thread on R3V and here :)

Yeh man, to be honest I was surprised it started on the first shot! The vacuum leak was the little hose of the left where the TPS switch is. Its funny because I reminded myself to hook it up before we started...obviously I forgot :)

The in-car stuff will come once the headlights go back on it and Sam gets plates and all other associated legal stuff out of the way.

Yeh the idle used to be rather lumpy, a lot of it had to do with the M20 lightweight flywheel that MM installed.

We put the stock dual mass and stock clutch on before we swapped the motor into the white car.

After completing this swap, the next 2 will be a piece of cake. In fact, I already decided that the black car will receive the motor from the bottom because it was a PAIN IN THE ASS to drop the motor (the m42) in from the top.

wow my ass is getting big...

ok, the 1600 project is going to take a long long time to finish, I couldn't bear not having my engine in a car for over a year (let's face it, it's going to be at least a year for the 1600 to be close to needing an engine) and... with premium well over $4.00 in NY, I figured on setting the thing up to drive in traffic and putting in a 3.64 LSD to help with with gas. I might be able to get 35+ mpg on the highway.

In general, the white car is going to be all about maintenance v.s modding... it's still going to be a hell of a ride!

by the time we're done, we will have pretty much disassembled 3 E30s, and reassembled two. We have (esp the M42 E30) one of the easiest cars to work on of all time, methinks.

That is a beautiful motor. I hope it goes well for you. Do you know any one who did that with an M42, with all the pics? I would like to see how the oil pump and timing chain look after 100k. I am seriously think of chainging mine. I am hearing a metal chain rolling noise. Like there is a lot of slack. But the funny thing is my car runs reall well. I would appriciate any info. Thanks and good luck.

That inline 4 is the famous MM motor! It was the first one =)

Febi Guibo is the owner of the white car.

We didn't pull anything apart on the MM motor because there was no reason to, the motor has less than 10k on it (i think).

Finally had the chance to do some more work on the motor!!!

I should be done by next weekend.

I snapped a two of the three torx bolts that are up front on the head. One is still stuck in the timing case cover.

I snapped the one that goes through the chain guide and the one to the left of it (drivers side) :(

Gotta order them and get this shit done already!

Anyways, on to the pics:

The progress seems to be coming along nicely. Sheesh, you are going to have a built motor right from the get go. But if you don't mind me asking, could you post a bit of the 318iS specific M50 swap info? I remember reading that you are going to be using your stock 240 getrag, are you using the stock e30 shift linkage? I've read the 24V swap thread over at r3v completely, but the M42 car specific info is kind of spread around. Also are you going to use the stock M42 rad and overflow? I know there have been many guys who have done the swap from their M42s but I haven't seen anything real specific. There is a thread concerning a guy who is swapping in a S52 but he doesn't really get into the details. It seems that all of the M20 guys say that the M50 isn't worth it and that the S50 is the only way to go, but to us, 50hp+ seems pretty worth it, haha. Keep up the good work man.

Hey man!

I decided to use the Getrag 250 that comes with the E36 325i because I didn't want to run into any fitment issues. Had I know that the trannies were almost identical in size and shape I wouldn't have purchased the driveshaft and tranny...but everything from motor to drivetrain will be E36.

As for the radiator, I'm keeping my stock M42 unit because I've been told it is more than adequate for the job!

The M50 is worth it because its much cheaper and you can always get that power. Besides you can get the S50 cams and the other bolt-on stuff and you'll be making around the same power for less. I believe the M50 weighs a bit less as well...don't quote me on that though.

Personally, moving up from lets say 110 hp (tired m42) to about 220hp is going to be more than plentiful!

Sam wanted a smoother idle...the MM flywheel had some clutch chatter and well Sam didn't want that in a solid DD.

Man, that engine has a lot of similarities to an M42/M44.

I'm pretty sure that barbed outlet does go to the heather core like you suggested.

As for the loose connectors, I'm thinking knock sensors. If not, temperature sensors.

okay, so this thing won't bloody start...

i have fuel, i have current going to coil and definitely have vacuum.

i checked robertk's thread about the auto tranny switch (pin 65 on ecu) and provided a 12v current and still nothing.

i will attempt to pull the coil pack and actually plug the spark plug into it and then crank to see if spark plug is actually getting current.

it also has the EWS delete chip.

i am almost convinced it is the crank position sensor but haven't tested it yet.

here are two vid's of how it cranks:

That thing is going to roar. And your ACT Weaves look badass on the shwarz. I think I'm going to go the M52 route when my engine gives out, but not as built as your motor. Good stuff, I can't wait to see it all together and some in car vids.
