4 lug to 5 lug swap

Hey anyone ever do a hub swap 4 to a 5 lug and if so whats all involved my thought behind this is that there is a much larger choice of wheels with a 5 lug bolt pattern vers the 4x100 that we are currently stuck with on our 318's

Just my uneducated opinion here, but it's too much trouble for the effort. You prety much have to switch to an M3 suspension to make this work iirc. Lots of pain. Lots of hassle. Lots of $$$. Someone jump in and correct me if I'm off base here.

You have to do the whole hub assemblies (I forget what exactly it is called). You also need to change the brakes.

The rest of the suspension is interchangeable.

It is not a cheap conversion to do, however there should be an easier method and I am looking into it now.

The OEM 4 lug is adequate. It is not a known problem area on E30's. The BBK and wheel considerations are dubious. Used M3 suspension is rare and a low buck upgrade to 5 lug is $1000.
There are BBK's and a ton of wheels in 4X100 with the correct offset and center bore. Most E36 wheels are 17-18" X 8" wide and 35-40 offset requiring spacers.

How much does that mess with the offset though?

I believe they are made in different sizes--15mm, 20mm etc. But, ultimately though, I don't think they are really worth it since one can only run porsche wheels=$$$$$$$$$. But, if there is one particular Porsche wheel you want to run, this is the way to go. One can always take them off as well.

I agree with Brian. I don't see any significant performance gains by converting over to a 5-lug bolt pattern, unless you just really want a 5-lug wheel. :rolleyes:

The cost significantly outweighs any advantage.

However, if you were to decide to do a 5-lug conversion, don't half-ass it! Get a Z3 rear trailing arm setup, get all new hubs and bearings, get M3 strut housings, and bigger brakes too! But, that also means a lot of $$$$$

It all comes down to the desires of the driver and how deep their pockets are.

If you are into competitive racing, depending on your class rules, it can hurt you (don't ask how I know). If it's just your fun car that you want to run unclassed and want a factory set up with better braking, it's worth it.

I don't think it's worth the money. There are still lots of nice 4 lug wheels :).
