I ran the car at Bandimere Speedway (Morrison CO)with the stock chip and with a ebay chip for $40. Bandibere is about 5000+ feet above sea level so N/A cars run a lot slower than at sea level.

My car is all stock with no mods or upgraded tires done to it. My fasted time was 18.122 out of three runs stock. The slowest run was 18.156. I shifted every gear in every run at 6500RPM launching at 3,5 to 4k RPM. Pic of the ticket is on the bottom of this post.

I installed the chip at the speedway, it took maybe 15min.
I noticed the difference right away, so i think. The throttle response was better along w/idle. I ran three runs with this chip as well. The slowest time was 17.834, also my first run. I had to change my launching from 4k to 35k rpm. 35k rpm gave me a 17.776. My final run was the fastest of the day, a 17.606 launching at 32k rpm. I was really impressed with the chip. A pic of this ticket is also at the end of this post.

Before all these runs, I did not do burnouts before staging for better traction. I only had this car for only a week and dont want to break it just yet.

I put my car on the scale with me out of the car and it weighed 2560lbs. With me in it was 2700lbs. these pics are also posted. The car has all its interior and had a full tank while on the scale.

I hope you enjoyed some of my research on ebay chips.
Next I plan to see how much time I shave off or add by converting to an electric fan and a cone filter w/ adapter(pop-charger) sorry im a nissan freak.

one small step for a man's bimmer, one giant step for ebay items that most of the time seem very sketchy but in the end turn out to actually work somewhat!

Did I miss something or is that a half second?

Yeah, there is definitely a difference with the chip. I did something very similar about a month ago, but comparing 0-60 runs. Check here for vids and info:

Fastest I've ran the 1/4, also a completely bone stock car, and on crappy touring tires, was a 16.9. This also was only my second time out to the track, so I had horrible reaction times. I know I could run faster, but it was packed at the strip when I went, so I only got three runs in. I was just happy to break outta the 17's. However, I am much lower in altitude than you are.

Altitude does make a huge difference, especially on n/a vehicles. I also drive a turbo’d 240sx and I can hardly see a performance difference at sea level compared to 5000+ feet.

No need to do burnouts anyway if you are using street tires. Only Slicks benefit from that.

Not true at all! I run a 240sx (sr20det) with street tires at the strip all the time. If I dont do a burn out before the run, I just spin my tires half way down the track. with a burn out i only spin a little bit. Burning out heats the tires up along with the lsd, a cold lsd is kinda like a open diff till the fluid or the clutch packs warm up. Now if you are talking posi thats a different story.

I concur-the other morning my car was cold, along w/ the lsd, and i tried to get some wheel spin off of a stop sign and the whole rear-end just shook as the tires would "slip then grip" numerous times in a row until they caught grip for good. i was still very sleepy and the bouncing gave me a headache. *318is
4.10 lsd

The above only makes sense if you have a VLSD. Clutch types should behave the same, or at least VERY similarly, regardless of temp. The tires thing...it really depends on what kind of street tire your running. Anything close to R compound (ie high performance summer tires) will definitely grip better when warm, but regular run-of-the-mill tires; probably negligable.

Well thats really interesting. Guess I'll be keeping that chip in there.... I was pretty sure it lit up at 4k when it did not before.

That doesnt have much to do with BMW's though. A clutch type LSD doesnt need to be warmed up. Nor do street tires.

Heh, after lots of cuts from the damn motronic unit i got the ebay clone chip in, and in all honestly, the power band felt more even and constant from lower rpm's, there wasnt a great deal of difference to be felt asides from that, it'll stay in for the moment, see how well it goes :), pretty good results for 20$ if you ask me :P.
