Dumb question, how much is the ICV door on an m42 supposed to move? On mine it moves maybe a 8th of an inch, leaving 3/4 of the aperture closed. On my M20 though it opens so that the whole aperture is wide open. Is that normal? New to M42's so please bare with me, thanks.

When I had mine off and put 12 volts to it, it snapped completely open .

Is there a way to clean these out? I have mine out because I'm cleaning and painting the intake manifold, and might as well do it if it is safe. My idle isn;t bad, though, so if there is any risk of damage I won't mess with it.

Well I had mine out because of bad idle. The idle was just terrible, it would jump around from about 600rpm up to 1700rpm and would eventually stall. If I unplugged the electrical connection to the icv it would run smoother, just too fast. I cleaned it with carb cleaner to no avail, it wasn't dirty, just mechanically toast. I even tested it externally with 12v and would only ever open 1/4 of the way.

Though on my m20 a few years back the idle got terrible, took it out, flushed it with carb cleaner and voila, worked great! So sometimes you win some

Ive cleaned mine twice with carb cleaner. However, I've been told many times not to do it because there is a film coating inside of the ICV that will get removed if you clean it with brake clean, or carb cleaner. I won't use it on customers vehicles for that reason, but I gave it a shot on my own car.
