I've got a friend who recently swaped an E30 M42 and managed to fry his ECU. Trouble is we can't find an e30 m42 ECU anywhere, but we found 3 busted e36 m42's. (mechanical reasons)
Could we take the wiring harness and the ECU from an e36 m42 and install it an the e30 m42?

Thanks!

May be able to, but the E36 ECU is going to be looking for a knock sensor, so you'll need to get used to the check engine light. Too bad you aren't in the US, I have two E30 M42 ECUs sitting here.

I have been running a E36 ECU on my E30 318iS, it made no faults for the short time it was mounted.
BTW, there is a few ECU´s for sale on www.ebay.de

Can I flash the chip with the E36 tuned software and run it that way?

Or use the chip from the E36 DME?

you can just change the wiring and the ecu with a m42 e36 ecu , and add knock sensor , change the AFM with a MAF ( the e36 uses maf ) and the car will work fine...

Yea, I was kinda hoping to avoid that... I wanted to use stock wiring from an E30, but a 95 motor. And I know that the cams are going to be different, so I figured the fuel maps would probably have to be different as well, right? I mean I know it will probably run, but not well... (Or am I wrong?) I would do the wiring thing, but I am pretty sure I am only getting the bare engine, so I wont have the access to that, unless I buy it all separately.

Hello, I would like to bump this as I really need help.

I got the motor, its in very good shape, I want to put all my E30 accs on it, and run it, however I dont want it to run like crap when i put it in the car. I am pretty sure the cams are of a different design for the E36 318is, especially the later one - as I have the 95 motor, that is why I would like to know if anyone can tell me, if I put the stock E30 wiring harness and the E30 DME and sensors, what will happen to the way the car runs, I would like to have the similar fuel economy and the power of an E36, on a stock E30 DME, and for that I would probably just need a fuel map, right?

I am new to this mapping thing and I would really like some help please!!

Thank you!! :)
