Clutch master and slave rebuild time !!!

Hi all,

Well the time has come that I was dreading.

I have been loosing clutch fluid to goodness knows where over the past couple of months.

This morning I saw a small puddle on the ground under the car and checked it. You guessed it - clutch fluid.

It looks like my slave has finally given up the ghost.

I have already got a replacement master cylinder and will be putting a seal kit through it but I now have another problem.

Can anyone tell me what the bore size is on a clutch slave cylinder? The local spares place only lists a 20.9mm but according to RealOEM I should have a 22.2mm cylinder. RealOEM also lists a 19.5mm cylinder as well.

My car is a euro spec RHD Aug 1990 build (EE47457).

I would like to get a seal kit for it without having to have the thing laid up for a week, but if all else fails that is what I'll have to do, I guess.

If I can get this sorted I will try to do a write up on the over haul of the clutch actuation system if anyone is interested.

Wow, this sounds scary, as clutch fluid is basically brake fluid (clutch and brakes lines are not separated), and this could lead to clutch/brake failure!
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Slave is the one near the gearbox if I'm not mistaken?
Did your local place search by your cars VIN number? If not then there's a good chance that your local place may have the wrong part.

Well can't help you here really, this is what I have to put up with all the time.
Even though I ask for concrete parts, i still end up with the wrong ones most of the time.

I can't promise, but I will try to look it (bore size) up with BMW ETK, when I'm home.

Ok, hope this helps, just checked with BMW ETK:

01 Input cylinder clutch D= 19.05mm p/n 21 52 1 156 000
14 Output cylinder clutch D= 20,64mm p/n 21 52 1 116 300

There are no other cylinder's listed, nor cylinders with different diameter
Btw noticed that E30 has a separate tank for the clutch fluid, in e36 it's the same tank as brake fluid

All left-hand drive model E 30's I've seen take the clutch fluid off the brake master cylinder reservoir. As this has a few different divided compartments inside, the brake fluid wouldn't get low enough to affect the brakes. The clutch master has a small braided hose that leads to the clutch master cyl. The line comes off the reservoir quite high, so you'd find yourself without clutch long before brakes.......
