So i finally got them out joined with a bit of cursing. The problem with removing them together is that you have to get the tilt just right and without a distubution leveler it is a PITA. I ended up scaring the condenser a bit and bending some sheet metal above to get it out but it can be done. All this said I'm replacing the upper oil pan which is cracked, ive been driving with it epoxied for 3 months.

Does anyone know what the little metal clips are that come out the side of the gearbox, two tiny holes, i lost in the process

thanks steve

yeah that clip is holding your throw out bearing lever in place.

6 hours isn't to bad by yourself and without a load leveler. I haven't done it on a 318is. But have had to do it a couple times on 325s. Honestly I think its easier and takes less time then actually just pulling the tranny in the car. At least I could pull the engine/tranny quicker then tranny alone. Those bolts are a bitch sometimes.

BTW load levlers are like 20 bucks on ebay. Make the install really easy. I had my E30 Turbo engine in and fired in about 2 hours. only about 10 minutes to drop it in and bolt the mounts up all by myself, makes it pretty easy.

When you pulled the engine, did you take the intake manifold off?

You don't need to remove the intake manifold to remove the engine.

Just a tip. Do NOT get the $12 load leveler from Ebay. It is a POS in every sense of the word.
