HID conversions for H1?

Anyone know of a HID conversion kit for the euro elips? I think it is for H1 and not the 9006 I found on Turner Motorsport.

You can get a kit with bulbs and ballasts from www.understeer.com for like $200.

I was talking to Febi about some E46 lenses in the E30 lights for a TRUE conversion, but the man is really busy! Using H1 HID bulbs will work, but will not work RIGHT. You will end up blinding other drivers a bit and not getting an optimal light spread. This is due to the inherent differences in light emission points/shapes of the bulbs.

I don't know about that D2 stuff. Here is a writeup someone did, just do that and buy an HID kit with all that stuff in it.

Hey Mr. Purcell...

How is the light pattern with the D2S retrofit? Does it project clearly and on the road with good focus/concentration? I am not sure how different the glass lens in the E30 headlights is from the one in newer cars that came with HID lighting.

The aftermarket kits with the rebased D2S bulbs has the same filament positioning as the original H1 bulbs so the hotspots stay the same and doesn't change. You should be ok in using an aftermarket H1 kit. Just make sure you go with a reputable company/brand that has a good warranty. There's been a few bad batches in the past that has had long term defects.

I've done the D2S retrofit on my E36 awhile ago before companies started to come out with rebased D2S bulbs. If I were to do it again, I would just save on the hassles and get an aftermarket kit imo.

If you're worried about blinding oncoming drivers with the upticks, You can either adjust the uptick angle or eliminate the E-code pattern altogether like I did to bisymetrical as found on some cars in Japan.

Are you talking about just the bulbs or the whole kit? There are several vendors on various forums that sell the whole kit for under $200. But you do run the risk of long term reliability with some of the Chinese/Taiwanese made ballasts. I believe the ones distributed by Apex Cone are good since they used to offer lifetime warrant on ballasts but not sure if they still do.

Of course if you can get rebased bulbs separately, you can always run the Hella Ballasts which are OEM and have been tested for long term reliability already.

I have seen the ApexCone/Xtec kits before. They have H1 based bulbs available. Are these the ones that were rebased properly, or are they something else that will end up blinding everyone else? Thanks.

Those are the ones that I've had experiences with. As for rebasing a bulb properly, most of them are all the same.

Sweet. Well, next time I have $280 available it is HID time! I just wanted to make sure I was getting a proper setup. Blinding other drivers and not actually putting more light on the road would not be worth the $, as much as HID's look cool.
