You guys gonna dyno when done? I want to see numbers on this...

Its being tuned on mustang dyno so yes. www.eplabs.net is doing the motor install/tuning.

lol funny you said that. There was a Ti at the shop getting an inspection today and I thought it would be a pain in the ass to work on the engine. Btw, do all Ti's have the electric fan?

Variance

Yes, as far as I know, every ti came outfitted with an electric fan stock. It's not so much that the engine is a pain to work on, but there's no way in heck you could top-mount a turbo.

Do not let that picture fool you.

There is quite a lot removed from the bay in that picture. Yes there is room to work, but not much in terms of room for turbos and such.

Notable items missing, washer tank, fan, shroud (which is huge), and airbox, which is also huge. Granted most are easily moved or changed, them not being there at all makes it look bigger than it is.

Even though it is FI, it would be interesting to put an EGT probe on all 4 cylinder banks as I have a hunch that #3(and possibly 4) cylinder could be off on the a/r's given the intake manifold design. I don't see as much taper towards the end of the cylinders but I could be wrong. Good job on the fabrication though. What TB is being used?

jon volk
02-02-2007, 04:42 PM
It starts to taper at cylinder 3. The shop thats tuning it spec'ed a bored Passat throttle body. The entire setup is very overkill as the initial goal is "only" 300whp. We know the customer and he will definately get bored and want to turn it up so any future upgrades will only need a larger turbo, more fuel and possibly a throttle body swap rather than tearing the whole system apart. The intake will work well, theres 11tybillion different opinions on plenum shapes and such. The only times Ive ever seen real world problems crop up are when severe edges/angles are used or if its grossly over/undersized plenum. We're anxious to get dyno results on the whole setup and it will be completed fairly shortly.

Looks awesome!

whats the volume on the plenum? I recall the s42 cars ran around 4litre or so?

why not itbs?

jon volk

why not itbs?

Customer wanted a single TB, dont have to synch 4 seperate throttle blades, less expensive, no hassle of blending alpha n and map based input for part throttle transitioning for good driveability, list goes on. He's running stock cams so theres not really much reason anything else. One of the main benefits of ITB's besides throttle response is not having cylinder pulses from huge cams causing havoc in a post tb intake plenum. Surprisingly as of late, well designed single TB intake manifolds have been making more power than ITB's in many honda n/a applications.

GT2871 I believe. It was supplied by the shop whos doing the tuning/motor build.

Are you referring to the throttle body or the intake manifold as far as pricing?

How much are you charging this guy out the door?

jon volk
02-08-2007, 08:31 PM
After all is said and done I believe his invoice on fabricated parts is around $5k Thats turbo manifold, intake manifold, intercooler, intercooler coolant tank, intake pipe, fuel rail, intercooler piping, couplers, tbolts, downpipe, full exhaust all the way back with a muffler and 2 resonators.

labor too?

Labor for???? That pricing is out the door for all my parts custom fabbed on the car. Labor for motor building/swapping, tuning, suspension work etc etc will be additional from the other shop thats working on it. Its going to be an large bill for the total build but every suspension piece will be done, the motor will be bulletproof and powerfull and he wont need to do anything else besides drive it and if desired further turn up the boost.

A typical turbo manifold, off the shelf air/air ic, custom piping, dp, exhaust usually costs in hardware ~$3500.....this car pretty much has everything so its substantially more.

sorry i keep forgetting that you are providing the parts.

out of curiousity, do you guys install stuff? how much would that cost in labor if so. im asking because i may decide to go f/i in the future, and im definitely not experienced enough to tackle something that big.

We dont do full drivin in/drive out installs at the shop. I work closely with another local shop who primarily does tuning but installs as well. If you were interested to see what a complete package would cost, contact www.eplabs.net and ask what your pricing options would be for engine management, tuning, and installtion ancillary items such as oil lines to go with our fabricated parts. If its something you'd like to persue we can go from there.

Intake manifold is $975. Info is up on the website now.

Customer wants no visible signs that the car is turbocharged. Core will support more than the motor will make.

I was working on the cosmoline on my engine today and came up with a question. What do you do with the box that the spark wires come from when you turbo an M42?

Cop

Relocate or cop. Both work. Wire harness is long enough to move it just about anywhere you want.

Ive only got a small cooling rad on line and would like to upgrade to alarger one.

cheers matt
