Are all of these Euro only models?

to my knowledge yes. there is probably some grey market ones around here though?

Note the rover, not a bmw, but has the bmw engine, and right crank.

Does anyone know the BMW part number(s) for the crank that will work with M42's?

Why the m47n crank isn't correct?

i dont know if you guys know this but Metric Mechanic has a "kit" M47 crank (at88mm stroke) for like $1200. they machine it and everything for you, all you have to do is install it.

by the way, i love this reference guide, very helpful.

you can use the m47N crank you just need anotehr piece machined. its also a little longer stroke.

You can get the crank for cheaper then 1,200 else where but yeah, you can go that route as its an easy way to go.

the cheapest i have found in the states was like $780 (plus you would have to get it machined). correct me if im wrong, please tell me if there is somewhere where you can get them cheaper, because i need one eventually when i do my build.

Thanks for the reference mate!

BTW, on BMW TIS 2007, I found out that E46 318d M47N has 90mm stroke without flywheel balancer and looked similar to E46 318d M47 crankshaft with 88mm stroke
The price of both crankshafts are similar, according to this site:

http://bmwfans.info/original/E46/Lim/318d-M47N/ECE/R/N/2004/10/mg-11/ill-11_3513/

If it can be used with E36 S50 B30 US M3 piston which has 86mm diameter and 32.8mm compression distance plus 135mm conrod length, the resulting displacement is 2,091cc (86mm x 90mm) with 1,5 conrod ratio. Off course you need to enlarge the bore to 86mm (2mm larger for m42 or 1mm larger for M44)
The total deck height will 211.80mm or it will sits 0.35mm lower than M42/M44 standard deck height.

What do you think?

In the link above, thrust bearings are shown to be on the block and also on main bearing cap. The specs offer different sized journals and a second measurement which is for different sized thrust measurements. The M42 only has provision for a thrust bearing on the upper half of the journal. The main bearing cap is like all of the others. As a result, this is a weak spot on the M42. Is the main bearing cap modified for the diesel bearing or is the crank just bolted as is?

pretty much spot on. thats interesting about the 90mm stroke though, good find. link isn't working for me though...

Price in USD or Euro??

Price is in Euro (880 Euro) according to www.bmwfans.info

However, further comparison on ETK 2007 between the 90mm stroke crankshaft of E46 318d M47N (BMW p/n 11217790928) and the 88mm stroke crankshaft of E36 318d M47 (BMW p/n 11212247515) shows the difference in guide bearing shell and bearing shell used on the crankshaft (different BMW part number).
The guide bearing shell and bearing shell used on the crankshaft of E36 318d M47 and M42, M43, M44, M50 and M52 engines are all similar
So this is inline with the reference guide from Mike Kowalski in the beginning of this thread.
In other words, the 88mm crankshaft of 318d M47 seems the best fit to use as a stroker crank on M42 M44 engine.

Or, can a little bit machining on the block will accommodate 90mm stroke crankshaft of E46 318d M47N ?? Any idea?

is the m47 crank forged or cast? Oh, can we sticky this post for easy reference?
