I was at the time going on a vacation to Florida, and went a little earlier to buy the car and get it running again. I had a working transmission here in Iceland from the 1987 520i one, and took it with me to Florida. I packed it in my suitcase (okay, it was more like a bag), and took it with me as luggage.
