What's the story behind the factory installed ones? Part of an option package or just a stand alone option?

Every is i´ve seen in Spain came with the black roof liner. What was standard in the U.S.?

I'd figure they had a bunch left over from earlier production & installed them for the sunroof-delete option.

I'm not sure how many interior or exterior colors actually were available. I've only personally seen E30M42 sedans in four exterior colors (red, white, black, silver) & two interior colors (black & grey).

e30 iS Coupes seem to have more options...I suspect sedans must have sold mainly out of dealer stock.

I've seen grey, beige, black and blue vinyl interior. With beige and blue also being offered in cloth.

I have only seen beige headliner. dkbmxer I am jealous of your black liner.

I am sure i've seen more than Red, White, Black and Silver exterior. But I cannot be positive.

Sunroof issues are oh-so-solved, except for the relay (LTS was right - it doesn't matter much). It was the slip clutch adjustment. It only needed a twist or two...I'm very pleased with myself. :)

I still have to re-cover the sunroof panel, the vinyl has curled off the whole front of my spare panel. I'm thinking about foam-backed tan cloth. Anyone have a good fabric suggestion or color match for the stock roof liner? I'm off to Michael's or Joanne Fabric sometime soon!

Let's put it this way, i've seen close to a thousand of E30's. Never once with a black headliner.

a few pictures... the check panel isn't hooked up, just filling the hole since the stock 318is one was messed up. color looks off due to the flash at night, i'll take more in the day time. it's also dirty, just need to wipe it down.

I hate to admit it, but we threw a little birthday party for my car this year...20 is a big deal! How many cars get there, especially with 250,000+ miles? I'm such a geek.

The kids loved it though. We gave her a wash & a good vacuum, treated the leather, cleaned out the trunk, filled all the fluids, etc.

I'm with DVM, they are RARE!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been into E30s for about 10 years and the only one I've seen in person was at a yard here in Germany- none in the US.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that a black headliner was/is offered as an option in ''high performance'' cars in Europe. I've seen it listed as an option in Porsche brochures for instance.
I believe all E30M3s came with black headliners. I had a Brilliant Red, sunroof delete, 318is with a black headliner. My current 318is with sunroof has the regular (beige) headliner. I've seen an Alpine White II 318is with sunroof and a black headliner. So there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to what 318is got fitted with what colour headliner.

I have a US spec car with sunroof, that came with a factory black headliner. I haven't checked on the build date.

My 318is (August 1990) UK model has full black headliner and sunroof aswell as full black interior. All as standard and in need of some tlc in certain areas.

I just took a look at mine and saw headliner/sunroof was black (or a very, very dark grey).

I've seen this type of bar in catalogs as options in Porsche, for hanging cloths.

Is that possible?

Just thought I'd update:

My DD is Alpine White w/ plain blue cloth interior and no sunroof. Build date 1/91 and beige headliner

My partcar is Alpine White no sunroof and had tan vinyl interior. Build date 5/90 and black headliner


Does anyone have a DIY on how to take that headliner out? I'd really like to put it in the DD before what's left of it gets hauled away. I plan on doing a full interior swap on the DD since I've got a full set of black / grey houndstooth collecting dust :D
