I'm interested in this too. It'd be a lot of work though.
That 175 binary (http://tunerpro.net/download/bins/BMW/) is tempting... It'd need a chip burner though, or some Moats hardware.

You need Willem programmer for eprom ;) Does someone know how to tune stock ECU? Or at least how to tune the ignition map?

I was considering other solutions too. I'd go with a Megasquirt II or (since you're in Europe, maybe the KData KDFi. (http://www.k-data.org/index.php) It's only 250 Euro, adding the JAW is another $75 IIRC. Then you'd have a standlone that could do anything at all, with support from an open source forum. (though I don't think they'll help you out with the KDFi unit.
Megasquirt II kits are as little as $250, with a $150 for the Tech-edge WBO2 that you'd need.

Sometimes standalone isn`t better solution. Having done nothing serious to your engine editing the chip ( EPROM ) is better than MS :) EPROM Programmer in Bulgaria coasts about 35 eur, tunerPro is free, EPROM chip is about 1 eur or less. The only thing you need to know is how to tune your chip, so this is my problem. I don`t know how to tune DME

That's one of the nest things about Megasquirt. They've developed an open source app called megatune that will read the WBO2 & correct maps automatically. You can also log just bout any sensor you'd like to. Most importantly, they have experts that will help out on their forums. I know the M20 has run successfully on MS, and I've heard of a few running turbo M42s. You might be able to get a map pretty close right off the board.
Tuning is very expensive here. Dyno time is like $50 & up/hour. A decent tune would go for 4-5 hours, I'd figure. That'll pay for the whole MS deal right there.
TunerPro is a great package too, just depends on which way you'd like to go with it. OEM Bosch stuff is pretty well built too, not a bad idea to go that way. I'd start with stock maps & get a TechEdge or JAW WBO2 to log your mixture, then tune from there.

I use TunerPro -but beleive me its not so simple like its look!
To use Tuner Pro you'll need some knowlege for how Motronic's
work! I have too many bin files that i can share here- but the xdf. files must be created ! So in this momemt i work with ECM Alientech and WinOls to define the maps -then write the xdf.
Just for example- ECU Bosch 0261200950 with software 1267357167
have RPM limiter 6800 in stock- the address when the limiter is stored is 42d3 (in bin file) and one other place!!?- look in bin and try to find it ? Try to look in this file and follow your logic to find it! When you find it (if you can) you'll go a step ahead! One hint - look not only binnary - text format too!!!

I was wondering if anyone has tried to tune with tuner pro? I downloaded the bin that has the same software version as my chip and loaded the xdf and the maps show up and look pretty simple to tune other than there being several fuel and ignition maps you must tune. i guess i will be ordering the ostrich 2 soon to see what can be done. it seems pretty simple once you have a complete xdf and can map trace. These maps are what i am seeing; all fuel, all ignition, rev limit, cold start enrichment, you can even scale for bigger injectors.

I would like to find a component list and where to get all the goods to make this work. I'd love to take a crack at it. I just can't find a list of everything i need (modules, harness', burner, etc...)

I guess i should have been more specific. I was wondering if anyone has tuned with the bin (http://tunerpro.net/download/bins/BMW/318i_175_soft1267356378.bin) and xdf (http://tunerpro.net/download/bindefs/BMW/BMW_175_318i_soft378.xdf) for the M1.7 DME 175 for the e30 M42. I have installed tuner pro RT v5 and have an ostrich 2.0 on the way. I just wanted to make sure the maps defined are correct and do not cause any problems when tuning. I still need to get a reader/burner to pull the bin off my ebay chip to see what maps they changed.
