Thank you Sean! :D

M42_jester: What an intercooler does is cool down the 'charge'. When the air is sucked into a compressor in inevitably gets warmed up. A bi-product of the compression is heat which gets transfered into the air, as I'm sure you're aware, engines don't like warm air, it's less dense and doesn't burn as well. The way we combat this with an FI engine is to add an intercooler (whether it be air to air or air to water). Regardless of the type of compressor (turbo or super charger) you require an intercooler to bring the charge temperatures down. An efficient intercooler can make all the difference to the performance of the system. Hope that helps :)

The engine is currently being a total gitand keeps cutting out once warm, trust it to be a git when it was all working.

Any way inbetween fault diagnosis trying to figure out whats cause that issue, I've been doing bits and bobs in the engine bay.

To keep the engine bay looking neat I decided to put the head light backing covers back in:

I'm still modifying the other side one will get a pic soon.

Now to combat the fact I’m blocking off my CAF I made up another one. I fitted an aluminium cone jobby to the N/S fog light blanking panel and one to the flat bit in front of the wheel arch. Then simply linked them together with some flexible ducting:

Thanks :)

I've picked up my Rotrex C30-84:

So I’ve been having a play with some cardboard, tape and metal strips. I’ve come up with 2 designs so far.

Design number one was my first idea. Simple; bolts to the alternator points and then folds at a currently unknown angle and then has the vertical mount for the charger:

The disadvantage I can see with this is the way the weight is held on one horizontal bend in the material and there will be quite a lot of stress on the bend. The tension from the belt is likely to pull it back across causing it to twist slightly.

My other design has more bends but they’re vertical making it harder for our friend gravity to pull the charger down. It also shows signs of being easier to triangulate for extra strength:

I’m not sure how my tensioner will work with either design. I’m going to decide which will be best then develop that one instead of working on two and having both in a way ‘half’ designed due to time being split between them.

Took a quick pic of my growing library:

Ok so I have made some adjustments, I have left 25mm around the outside of the super charger hole so plenty of meat there (may reduce if a little extreme), I then appropriately angled the bottum to it looks neat then put in a triangular horizontal section:

Before I start properly measuring this I do need to get my crank pulley fitted up or it's a waste of time

nice work man, I'm going Turbo on mine but have always been curious to see a supercharged M42, can't wait to see it finished ;)

Good luck!

I just bought the Mocal takeoff plate from the Mocal importer to this side of the pond (BAT in Florida... They actually didn't even know it existed, so they have to import it from GB).

I have a Z3 powered by a supercharged M44 and I've been looking around for option on how to add an oil cooler.

I've bought an M42 oil filter housing and sent it to IE to get their cap fitted: they were able to make their M52 oil cap fit, but they couldn't find a filter that would.

I decided to give up on that route and with the takeoff plate.

Do you happen to remember the thread size? I know you've relocated the alternator, but is that necessary to fit the plate or you did to fit the blower?

Thanks for posting about that plate: did your setup ever gave you any problem?

Well my supposedly brilliant engine made a clunk and a rattle from the timing case and stalled after 35 minutes of sweet running the other day. So, the timing case is coming off for inspection to see if anything is arie. I have the first section of my bracket designed, the next stage is to design the charger mounting face and from that the two triangular strengthening sections.

The other small thing that needs doing is I need to drop the rear sub frame so I can change the leaking fuel tank and also fitted mid braided brake lines, poly sub frame bushes and my 4.1 LSD.

Hi LPCapital

The thread size is M22, I then used a male to male adaptor to take it to 1/2" BSP (So a M22 -> 1/2" bsp). You will also need the oil pressure valve as shown HERE. I fitted the plate because I fancied relocating the oil filter, not sure why just did lol! However using the unions I used (not sure how much tighter they could be with out restricting flow) meant that they would've hit the alternator any way, it just so happens I was moving it so it wasn't a problem.

Regarding functionality it was just get the lengths right and it together and there you go. Where I fitted it over there I think I worked out I needed an extra 300ml of oil for the pipe work and all that jazz so worth buying an extra 1L bottle of oil.

I may add an oil cooler at a later date if the oil starts getting too hot.

Why did you choose this route instead of a straight motor swap?

^Really??...

Four months of inactivity, and you ask someone, on an engine specific forum, why they didn't install a different engine:confused:

If im jumping the gun here then i apologize, but please don't try turn this thread into a straight 6 vs 4 cylinder discussion.

Vision, i'd love to see some updates ;)
I'm very tempted to go with a Rotrex charger now, as they seem to be much more compact and quieter than the Eaton.

I got the prices on those plates a little wrong they're actualy in the region of £60 UKP not £90!

My engine has recently died on me and I'm not sure why. I will get some info up once I get some more progress but the whole thing has stalled for the minute.

You mean the takeoff plate? Mocal in EU is manufactured and sold by Think Automotive (http://www.thinkauto.com/). Here in the US the importer is BAT Inc (http://www.batinc.net/mocal-central.htm)

I paid $138 for mine, but it has to be modified to fit the M44 without messing with the alternator. I don't know about the M42, but it appears the bracket supporting the alternator on the M42 is different so it might fit as is...
