Oil pan gasket

Is the use of a RTV Silicone Gasket Sealant recommended?

The reason I ask--a couple months ago I replaced my oil pan gasket and didn't use any. As I got ready to replace my oil today, I noticed a good amount of sludge in the area leading me to believe that I need to replace the gasket and apply some sealant to prevent this from happening in the future.

Yes, use it, but sparingly.
