I'm looking to repaint my car and I was wondering if I should. It has milions of tiny scratches through the paint (http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1812) you can see it good in the fourth picture. If you think I should where is the cheepest place to buy oem paint?

I'm not sure but I've heard paint isn't something to cheap out on. A lot of people recommend PPG paint, just get them to match it or I think there's a color code with each color.

Perhaps it is worth having an expert try and restore the original paint. If the paint is still reasonably thick they can do wonders.

Ya I heard about PPG and went to their website. It was 270 bucks or something like that for a gallon. But how much paint would be needed to coat our cars about two times with a little bit to spair?

I’m a painter at a local body shop around Wayzata, MN and all I can say it’s not cheap at all for paint materials you’ll need roughly a gallon of color to paint the whole car and the jambs (so there aren’t any tape lines). Not to mention sealer under the base coat and also clear coat. You’re looking at ~ $1,000 just in paint supplies.

It's over $500 for primer, base, and clear coat in Glasurit, Spies-Hecker, Sikkens, etc. It's the same in Dupont and PPG for their top of the line. You can get lower quality and price in Dupont and PPG but not the the first three. Then there's all the stuff you don't think about that doesn't cost big bucks but just keeps adding up. I pulled all of the trim and glass and did the prep work. The shop sprayed, color sanded and buffed it. I picked it up, put in the taillights in the parking lot and drove it home without even a windshield.
On a 16 year old car it's hard to justify a top of the line paint job that costs twice what the car is worth and it's easy to live with a few imperfections and not do door jambs, etc.

The amount of fun you have with a car is inversely proportional to the cost of the paint job.

Keep it lookin' like a beater, but make it a rocket that handles. You'll have so much more fun that way.

If you're into street rods or muscle cars, you'll know what I'm talking about. Painting a complete car is a pain and an expensive one at that. It is seldom worth the expense. That's why finding a 318 with good paint and clean interior makes more sense than a mechanically perfect car. Mechanical stuff is easy to fix.

I have the same silver with the same problem, it looks like someone went over the entire car with steel wool. I can tell it is just the clear coat and if I go over it with a "glaze" it will temporarily dissapear. I am sure that there is some product out there that can make it look good enough as this seems to be a clear coat issue and not with the paint underneath. Anyone have a suggestions? Experience?

The clear coat on my car on the roof looks like frost so I can get away with it during the winter, like the person above I'm wondering if I could buff it out then just have another clear coat put on? I have zero experience with paint so it would be great to know.

I tend to agree with this. In regard to paint swirls and imperfections, you might want to get a detail pro to try to buff it out. My friend is a detailer and does wonders on paint that some would consider a lost cause.

Also, if have chipping/flaking in certain areas, you might want to investigate the mobil spot painters that dealerships use. They come to your location and do the work. They only paint spots and the good ones do a very good job without it ever being noticable. The cost is a lot more reasonable than getting full paint job.

As for me, I'll probably repaint the car myself this summer. It will definitely be a lower line of PPG or Dupont.
