BMW02RALLY
« on: August 31, 2015, 11:21:02 PM »
Hello my name is Mark and I hail from The Valleys of Wales but I have lived on the Gold Coast in Australia for the past 8years. I used to rally a BMW 2002 in the UK when it wasn't broken but since being in Australia I have been using a GRP4 Escort Mk2 with a Duratec engine. Being a bit of a BMW tragic I have owned a total of 27 BMW's over the years.

Now that is sold I have gone back to my roots and I have bought a BMW 318ti and I am going to use it in the Forests of NSW and QLD.

It has been a very slow build so far as I've used all of my budget on the cage. I will be posting 'please help' threads in the various forums as I go because I am building one engine from the M44 and M42 engines I have.

I have attached a pic of my rally BMW's.

Hi Mark welcome

Nice ti, what do they weigh, e30s are 1050 kg, just curious

Not surprised about the fact that it has been a slow build someone went nuts on that roll cage, nice work.

Won't see to many 2002 in Australia certainly not rallying.

Cheers Rohan

About 1250KG apparently but I'm taking a saw to a lot of it because the cage now takes all the load. The cage was done by Rob D'Ercole at ProRace Engineering on the Gold Coast who is an ex-factory/works design engineer. He even got asked by Peter Brock to build him a car before he died so the cage is a thing of beauty. Rob is also helping me with the suspension as the e36 doesn't have a very good wheelbase to track ratio for quick directional changes you need on gravel roads so we are widening the track quite a bit.

I would love an E30 as I've had about 15 of them back in Wales but the compact is very cheap. The 2002 ended up a bit special with many Schnitzer and Alpina parts including an original slide throttle Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection setup from an F2 engine. It ended up with about 220hp from an 8valve but it went bang! But it was a tarmac car and wouldn't be very strong for Australian forests.
