What did you do with the cat and the resonator? Is the whole system custom made or looks like stock?

That video was the final step to make me purchase a Magnaflow! Expect some soundclips somewhere next week...

I assume this refers to me? I only have the magnaflow muffler - nothing else.

Yes, it referred to you. ;) I'll be replacing the cat with a Magnaflow resonator also, so I wonder how deep or/and loud the sound's gonna be lol, I guess there's only one way to find out!

I know how hard it is to make decisions on how your car will sound. As for the Magnaflow - I heard it first hand on my buddies car about 2 years ago. It sounded wonderful but I knew his was too loud for me so I went with a slightly bigger version.

I would personally never have bought a magnaflow until I heard one in person. Exhaust notes are very sensitive to my enjoyment of a car and I am glad we finally have a comparison for those who have been asking. I know I have no qualms with my magnaflow as the other ones are not my style.

What size mufflers fit our cars?  Are the all 4x9 or what?  Sorry, I don't know anything about mufflers.

Hm, the flowmaster sounded really good until the outside video. Guess I'll keep searching, and thanks for the videos!

Damn, I've been listening to both the Flowmaster and the Magnaflow video's and don't know which one I like better.  I think I like the Magnaflow's a little bit better, how much did your's cost e9nine?

Call me old but I think both sound good but I don't think I can live with it on a full time basis. And for the fact that it's on a 140hp car, I wouldn't want to attract all the ricers/racers on the streets and not have the power to back it up.

As for which one, assuming you like the sound of both, keep in mind that the Magnaflow has traditional packing and the sound will change over time as the packing deteriorates and/or fills with carbon. I believe the Flowmaster doesn't use the traditional packing but sound baffles instead and should retain the same sound characteristics throughout it's life(assuming no baffles get broken off).

Sound Performance FTW!!! ;)

e9nine, how has the sound quality of your exhaust held up?

Sorry to bring up such an old thread.

What's the main criteria for most of you when selecting exhausts - sound or performance?

Just curious.  Flowmasters have a very distinct sound - very metallic, almost "snappy," at least for the non-Deltaflow mufflers.

I have a 40 or 50 series Deltaflow on my 318is, in addition to the OEM resonator and cat (the muffler that was on the car - original, I believe - was rotting out, had the Deltaflow lying around, etc).  It is quiet, sounds decent, I guess, but it does not have the "classic" Flowmaster sound - the tincan snap is there, but damped a fair amount.

I guess the reason I ask is because Flowmasters and Magnaflows are SO completely different muffler technologies, it seems like sound is the #1 criteria.

A Magnaflow (or Dynomax Ultraflow - those are very good, they tend to be quieter than Magnaflows, for some reason, all else equal), but they're a more traditional perforated tube with packing around it.

A Flowmaster uses chambers and natural pulses to create low pressure within the exhaust, helping (allegedly) scavenge exhaust gases, thereby increasing efficiency.

Does it work?  Dunno.  On paper, absolutely.  I've never dynotested a Magnaflow (or Brand X) back to back with the Flowmaster, should do that, hmmm.  I like the concept - reversion is real, and a Flowmaster does seem to combat reversion.

I also think they sound cool on 4 cylinder cars.   Absolutely not for everyone  - they sound different.  Shrug, I like them.

So, just curious - is it all about sound, or performance, too?

Iain(no wrong answer, I suspect a Magnaflow and Flowmaster are going to dyno within tenths of one another)

For me it is just that I want it to be a little louder because a muffler really isn't gonna make significant increases in HP.
