rjcaptsean, i dont know if you have bought new gaskets yet or not. but FCP has pretty good prices, and they will price match getbmwparts.com, 149$ and up gets you free shipping..

The head gasket is goetze, and the other gaskets are victor reinz.

the gaskets for my head job cost me 114$, that is replacing every gasket that is touched doing the head gasket, including the head gasket and head bolts.

Can I get by without a head rebuild?

I took the head in yesterday after removing the cams (Just a bit nerve wracking, but easily done if prep'd right).  All of the lifters and bores look good and cams look great.  I haven't mic'd any of the wear surfaces, but at this point I am just going to walk with faith in my german engineers.

The head was pressure tested and checked out OK with no cracks.  I need two exhaust valves and the base was .003" out of true, so it will be machined. I was told that with the special setup for the machining the total would be $381 out the door.  Dang, one-half of what I paid for the car.  Anyone know exactly which cover has to be machined with it?  Im assuming it is number 1 in this diagram, but I can't imagine .003" making that much of a difference in the rubber gasket that seals that.

I purchased the majority of gaskets when I decided to do the timing components, so all I really had to add was the head gasket, top-lower timing chain cover gasket and small odds and ends like the oil filter to block gasket and o-ring. I am replacing all of the exhaust studs and copper nuts also.  I actually did a price comparison with Pelican, Autohausaz, FCPGroton, and some others that were not even in the same ballpark.  Pelican came out just about 5% higher overall, but they had a lot of stuff in stock that none of the others had.  I am a convenience guy, so 5% isn't much for the ease of getting everything from one place.

One more question:

I have the new style (M44) type chain tensioner.  Should I be able to just clean that out and re-use it?  There is no obvious wear on it and I can't find anywhere that says I should replace it.

it is part 1.

did your lifters rebound, i am assuming they took the cams out? i would ask them to check each lifter, some of mine were actually falling apart.

Also, from what i have been told, when you put part 1 back on the motor, get a second person to press down and hold it in place as you bolt it to the head...

When i did the motor, there was an updated part number for the chain tensioner.

I cant remember if i used the M44 tensioner on my car or not, i might have dont remember....

Don't feel bad, my head job is costing OVER 2X what i paid for my car...
hahah

Head is back and reinstalled.  Nerve wracking job, what with the hollow, brittle camshafts and head bolts that seems to stretch forever.
It came out pretty good with no cracks and a very tiny warp. (.003)

I thought about JB welding the corrosion up top, but in the end I decided that they were not very deep, and a bit of RTV filled them in nicely.  That gasket compresses a ton.
