San Diego Mechanic
« on: December 16, 2009, 04:04:19 PM »
Im interested to see if anyone can recommend a GOOD mechanic who really knows this engine in the San Diego area.  Im trying to help my sister trouble shoot an engine noise in her 91 and can only do so much via email.  She took the car to a shop of questionable nature and they told her after listening to the car for 2 minutes that they need to change the oil pump for $1100.
Im feeling like this is the "she's young, blonde and must be stupid" scam and need to make sure the real issue gets addressed.  From what I've read, the oil pumps seem to be pretty bullet proof.  Ive heard that there are some bolts from the upper oil pan that can drop down into the lower oil pan (but doesnt make much noise), or some blockage that might occur in the pickup, but nothing much on the pump themselves.
The car has been taken care of pretty well on her, end, oil changes, etc.  At 206K miles, Im thinking that the timing chain and maybe guide rail are due, as well as the tensioner.  But again, without hearing, i cant be sure.  I asked her to put a video on youtube, and will update when it happens.  In the mean time, if anyone knows a shop in the area that really knows these cars, or someone on the forum who would be down to take a look, it would be much appreciated.  She lives in Solana Beach.

Thanks in advance!

Ernest

I realize this isn't San Diego.  But Peerless in Orange County is the man to go to.  Can she make it up there?  Just give him a call and you'll see what I mean.
