hello guys,

i'm new here , but a regular on e30 zone

i bought an IS almost a year ago as a run around whil building my e30 M3 turbo, but as usuall i started modding

i have gone too far in my honest opinion

spec is as follows

engine:
heater plated removed from throttle body, drilled airbox with K&N pannel filter stainless steel back box with AC schnitzer style tail pipe.
rev limiter set to 6950rpm

WITH ENGINE RE-MAP CAR NOW DEVELOPS THE FOLLOING

162 bhp @ 5875 rpm
149 ft.lb @ 5425 rpm

transmittion:
standard but with an 36 B&M short/quick shift

chassis:
Inverted bilstein sport shocks, H&R springs, eibach adjustable ARB's and new links, polly ARB bushes, polly off set control arm bushes, new rear subframe bushes, front sturt brace. new top mounts at the back (e36 heavy duty ones )

brakes:
cross drilled disks up front, new disks at the back, pagid fast road pads all round, goodridge braided brake lines

interior:
black headlining M3 rear bench seat, AC schnitzer steering wheel, ACS alloy pedals, gear knob and hand brake leather gear and hand brake gaitors.

exterior:
its has its lip spoiler up front, tech 1 rear spoiler SE side skirts, proper smoked lights and indicators all round, fog lights, ACS badges up front and on the door strips as well. door handles and rear valance colour coded and a 325i front panel oil cooler vent is ftitted and also colour coded.

wheels:
16" x 7.5 " AC schnitzer wheels with falken tyres
205/45 on the front and 225/40 on the back

i am selling her but planning on more up grades if i dont

first up would be th JB alloy fly wheel, and a bigger bore TB and design a airbox to accomodate a high flow ari filter, mabe advance the current cam timing, by 6 degrees as i belive this to give a bit more bite and fit an electric fan

but, what i'd really like are a set of cams, and strengthen the bottom end with ARP bolts, and possibly fully mappable management system as i think the AFM would not appreciate wild cams

what i need to know, is the actual gains on the cams available, i know piper and kent cams do them, piper being more aggresive

i drive the car hard and what i'm after is power, i dont really mind about sacrificing some mid range

any feed back would be appreciated

Nice rides!

I noticed you bypassed your TB coolant line, can you tell me what positive/negative changes you've experience since the modification?

no negatives so far to report

positives, well after a long hard drive the inlet manifold is always cooler, there for i recon the intake temp is lower which would aid power

is been pretty hot here in the uk as well

on a recent engine chip and re-map, the power was 147 BHP TO START!!

got it up to 162 bhp with only the above mod, K&N pannel filter in a drilled air box and a free flow rear silncer

welcome.

cant really help on the cams, but hopefully i might be experimenting soon, so i'd like to hear anyone elses views.

Dbilas also make some pretty nice sticks for m42.

i've seen a set on e-bay.de, temped by the price off �100 GBP!!

with a set of cams, and bigget TB and fine tuning 100hp per liter could be possible?? might as well go fot a 2.0l bottom end and that would make it easier and a 7500rpm monster

honestly... and this is just me... i have a pretty built up m42 with *aggressive* cams w/high overlap... (~100hp/liter)

...but since you have a swank M3 already... for the 318is I'd look at the gearbox and gearing.... how does a close ratio 6-speed tranny with a matched rear end (3.73 lsd) sound?

so i still crave a high rpm screamer

Those are some pretty impressive #'s. :eek:

One more question about the TB coolant bypass delete, any noticeable decrease in fuel economy?

well... this a long thread with my patented, uh, off topic moments, but the gist of it is here:

the m42 can definitely be built up to scream... there are some little things that need to be worked out, and ultimately, a conversion to solid lifters and a machined harmonic balancer would be extra insurance... but my engine can rev clear to 8000 rpms. i have a stock chip with a 7600 rev limit and generally shift around 7200-7300 when I'm standing on it.

Basically, you can think of a built m42 as 2/3rds of an s50/52... so you can get the same target hp/liter, same rev limit, etc etc... so, if you find a cam profile you like on the s50, in general the m42 will respond the same way...

this is a generalization, of course, but it may help folks rethink how they look at the M42 (eg, its more than an updated M10 or a detuned s14).

The numbers seem really great for those modifications.
If I read correctly you have:
1) added a chip
2) free flow exhaust
3) deleted the pre-heat to the throttle plate
4) air inlet modifications
Do UK cars have more power to start with? US cars have 136 HP stock. That's 26 HP gain. Did you extrapolate chassis dyno numbers to an estimate of crankshaft horsepower?
AND could you add a little more about "inverted" Bilsteins.
That is one of the nicest looking white E30's I've seen. Especially the body color side skirts and "proper" smoked lights.

firstly thank you

i was surprised my self,

the rollers are new state of the art dimsport, you put in all the cars specs, diff ratio tyre size and it works it out, i belive they are accusate as a stock Z4 was on before mine and made 2 hp un der factry figures ahd a re-map and left 8 hp up!!

looking at the history of the car it had a head gasket change a few years ago, so possibly the head was skimmed to up the C/R which would aid power.

the first run gave 147 hp , befor any ecu trickery !

i reccon i've just got a good one !!

cams seem to be the original ones as well

fuel economy has gone up since the session on the rollers

i'm not sure what sort of octane fuel you guys use , but i always run my car on 98ron shell optimax

shocks are the "sport" ones listed on the following link
