M3 style mirrors: where to get them?
« on: September 21, 2009, 02:53:51 AM »
I´ve seen quite a few e30´s with the side mirrors like the e36 m3 has, but haven´t been able to find where to buy them. I tried hundreds of online stores but they sell them for E36s, not E30s. Correct me if I´m wrong, the E36 mirror mounting surface has the same area and shape but three holes (instead of two as in E30s) and as far as I know is not just a matter of drilling an extra hole since the other two are slightly in a different pattern, is that right?. Where do these guys get them?
By the way, I´m not paying $400 for mirrors.
If you´re replying only to bash on me and express your personal opinion on how it´ll make my car look like crap ....go ahead, be my guest, I´ll agree that SOME of them look just cheap, crappy and plain wrong, but some look awesome. I will still like them.
like these :)

imo anything besides stock mirrors on our car looks like shit, but try ebay, they will have something. Why don't you get rid of the stock side mirrors and get a set of old skyline mirrors

Those ain´t bad either. But it´s not what I was looking for. I don´t think I could ever get used to looking that far in the front of the car to see who´s on the other lanes. I´ve searched eBay up and down, back and forth, for quite some time now, but they don´t have anything for e30´s. All there is in eBay is for e36 or e46 cars, some for the 5 series.

I don't remember if it was Bavauto or who it was, but some place had OE parts that were serious money.

Found these real quick - ebay item #: 200386701840

But I agree with 1991 E30 M42.  They remind me of somebodies ears, I just can't think of who.

yeah, I saw those too the other day (thanks for the tip though), but at $200 + shipping from Australia, it´s a little too much. I´d rather get the e36 ones or a universal one and make the ABS plastic base myself, which is what I will most probably do. If that doesn't work, which is not very likely to happen, then I lost $50 at the very most, trying to do something I think looks good. If it looks the way I expect it to in the end, I might even get some customers $:)$. Last night on eBay, a pair of said mirrors (for a honda civic) went for $1.99 + shipping (around 15 bucks within the contiguous 48). For real. And they didn´t look crappy at all. I have some other mods I´m working on I´ve yet to see on almost any car. Like the m3 mirrors, some people won´t like them, some people will.

My bad, they were not OE, but are def big money.
Over at bavauto their part is 51 16 1E30SPORT
You can find it in EXTERIOR | MIRRORS | SPORT MIRRORS.
They also have OE mirror parts, and heated parts too, which are badass and something I want to add ASAP (I live in Idaho)

Yeah, I´ve seen those a while ago. Their price tag is precisely what got me looking for those mirrors....someplace else. 500 bucks is plain ridiculous. What´s the weather like in Idaho?
By the way, I found a company in UK that sells the adapter plate for E30's so universal fitment m3 style mirrors can be used. Around $13 dollars + S&H. I wonder how hard can it be to make them.

Weather in Idaho is interesting, wide variety, we get all four seasons.
In Boise it get's over 100 and during the winter under 20.

for those intererested in this mod, I ordered the mirrors from eBay. They shoud arrive sometime this week. As you know, there´s no eBay store selling m3 style mirrors for E30´s this side of the atlantic ocean. Some sites such as bavauto and others sells them....for $200 and up. I ordered a set for an Acura Integra, which is my other car (just in case...) and as you also know, the mirrors are mostly all the same, what differs is the mounting plate which of course is different for basically every car, and without the right one you´ll have a hard time. I thought about making a mounting plate myself, but found this website in the UK, they sell the mounting plates separate from their mirrors, and for $20 shipped to my door, I don´t think that´s too bad, considering I won´t have to source ABS plastic, make it myself, etc. I mean, installation will be a snap!
Didn´t buy the mirrors themselves from them ´cause they were more expensive, and this way I will be able to use them in either car, should I change my mind. Looking forward for everything to arrive.

I already bought a set, haven´t mounted them yet, but I think they look nice. Got any pics of yours?
