Hi,

Im jonathan and im from Nr Liverpool in England. Now, i have a E36 compact which im turning into a road rally car.

ATM, the car is a 1600 single cam, but i have just bought a m42 for it with the loom and everything that should make it run!

Now before putting it in, im thinking of doing a bit of work to it. As this car is doing what we call road rallys, that is rallying on the public roads, starts around midnight, and you can do maybe 100-160 miles [all legal and properly organised], road rallying has certain ruling to keep cars quiet and relativly safe...

Rules are basicaly, cars must look standard, wheels are free, as are brakes, and safety items like roll cages, and bucket seats.

Engines must be 4 cylinder, 16v using the standard injection system that engine was manufactured with, air filters are free,

So, that means that i have to use the m42 injection, im not meant to bore out the throttle housing, but i will!

What can i do to my motor?

I would like to bore it out to 2000cc, is there any pistons that fit that i can get out of another bmw model or another type of car? Id like to do this mod!

Im not sure if i want to spend the money on cams just yet, but if the motor is out i may concider it, as the pistons may need pocketing.

If i dont use different cams, is there a good chip i can get for the ecu?

Is there different injectors i can get?

Isa there any other mods i should concider to the motor also???

Ihave started to fit a 325i flywheel, it hit the block where the sump bolts on so i had that machined so it now fits. Was this the right way to go about it?

THe car has a 325i LSD unit, fitted with a 5.0:1 CW&P, so i think this motor will want to be revy!

You can take off the spacer on the back of the m42 flywheel to have the flywheel a more correct distance. there are people who have machined it though. you should go for Cams and ITBs and tell me how it is!

when i took off the flywheel there was no spacer there!

Cat cams are maybe �700 and that is a lot i think for just a little bit of power.

I cant use throttle bodies

There are some places in the US that will do regrinds for roughly �200 the shipping would be more expensive to send it there, and have it sent back, but I think the exchange rate would be in your favor

how do you go with regrinds? I mean whast do you o with the rockers?

I have never taken a modern engine apart yet!

I have just been told that S50B30 pistons may take teh motor to 2000cc!!!

yes, with the e36 box being direct top, it should do about 102mph at 7,000

you do no modification to the rockers in a regrind, you take out the cams, (lifting the cover, and doing a 1/2 turn on each nut until the cams are out. send them out, and get more top end!

Why you use 325i flywheel? Just locate a 316I M40 wheel, should be plenty of those available in Merseyside too for a good price. Engine displacement can be increased easily to 2.1 with BMW parts (crank & pistons), also aftermarket pistons can be used, like Wiseco, JE etc. Also availalble in UK. Then just add E30 M3 ITB's and have Motronic chip redone and you are done for the Rally

How much difference of cams can you get on a regrind?

I am interested on this again now as it isnt that expencive!

I wouldnt mind some more wild cams, but cat cams etc are quite expencive for the gains i think, �600-700 seems to be the price, and i dont see spending that much to make maybe 20bhp.

That is two lads i know who built a car for for their mate, they did cat cams, and a few other bits, the motor must have cost them a fortune, but did 177 bhp. If i was to spend that type of money, i would remove the BMW motor and either fit a standard honda s2000 motor, or fit and tune a Volvo b230 motor...

I am a bit lost in all this you see, one minute i decide to do one thing ,and the next another.

Why the flywheel? Well because everyone told me that was the best mod to do, and i didnt know the m40 one was the one to use!

The m40 thats the 1600 single cam like i have just taken out of the car then i think!!!

The rules say it has to keep the standard injection system for that motor, so the factory m42 stuff only! Having said that, if i had a 2.3 m3 motor, i could keep that as it is, but not fit that injection to my motor.
