318is engine troubles
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:07:54 PM »
my engine is making a weird tickin noise which speeds up with the revs. its not the oil level or anything as i serviced it today (new oil and filter etc) what could that be? also the engine management light is on which gave an error code of knock sensor. where is the knock sensor on a m42 engine, how hard is it to change and what are symptoms of one that has failed as i want to know exactly what its doing. the engine feels like its trying to clear its throat around 2-3k then revs as usual again whilst in neutral and in gear. help me please!

There are two knock sensors. Both located under the intake manifold. The front one is approx between cylinder 1 and 2. The rear between 3 and 4. They hook up to the electrical connector that goes from the top of the lower intake to under the intake. The two other connectors there are the cam sensor and crank sensors. You might be able to get to the front knock sensor without removing the lower intake. You would have to remove the alternator for room. The upper intake would have to come off in any case. If you do remove the lower intake make sure the knock sensors get hooked up the same way. There is supposed to be plug differences but I used colored markers to code them.

cheers for that mate, plugged it in again today after replacing the knock sensors to find the tps sensor has failed as well. that would explain the poor idling and pulling away because the tps is telling the ecu that the engine isnt running.
