Good Morning! Searched and did not find a specific thread on this, so I'll ask here. Are all replacement water pumps for the M42 created equal? I know there are different quality options for M50 and M62 motors so I'm checking.

I see there's Graf and Laso pumps available. What was OEM for the M42?

Also, are there any things to be mindful for when swapping out the pump or is it fairly straight forward. I swapped all cooling, vaccumn and fuel hoses and thought the pumps are fairly inexpensive and since I'm in there anyway and don't know when this one was last or ever changed, it's cheap insurance... 141+k miles (Broken ODO...) I'm thinking thermostat too...

Make sure you get one with metal impellars. Not plastic! The plastic ones can break.

Just thought I'd follow up my question with a few pics for folks who might have the same questions.

I was motivated to change the water pump on my new purchase as it showed 141k on the odometer, I had no idea of when it was changed last and I had the intake manifold off doing other work, so it was way easy access to replace the water pump and thermostat.

Cheaper timewise to swap it now preventively than to wonder then this critical part may fail when I lease wanted it to. This way, I hope to have 25-40k miles before I wonder about it again...

Some folks have asked question on how you pull the pump out.

The original water pump next to the Meyle replacement. Note the original Laso pump has the plastic impeller.

I'd recommend you change your water pump and thermostat bolts if they look anything like this.

Anyway, it's all pieced back together and cooling like it's supposed to...

Yup. I agree. By the way Bav Auto sells both of those style pumps. At a decent price as well.
