Author Topic: Cylinder Head Gasket Cams Out of Timing? Please Help. (Read 2872 times)

Hello guys, I am in the process of replacing my head gasket, everything was going well, I took the head to a cylinder head shop to be pressure tested and machined, all came back well.

I had placed the camshaft locking tools on, and when I got the head back they had assembled it for me with the tools still in place. Now that I have placed the head on the block the bolt holes for the sprockets won't line up with the camshafts.

Before removing my head I rotated the engine 45 degrees anti-clockwise. I have rotated the engine back to TDC and inserted the locking pin, then placed sprockets onto camshafts. The lobes are facing each other and the arrows are pointing up perpendicular but the bolt holes are about 3-5mm off the centre. Any help would be much appreciated. Serge.

Also when I first pulled the head I noticed all valves closed expect cyl 2 and 3 now 1 and 4 are a tad open?

hard to tell without the full picture. post more pictures of the cams, the locking tools, the crank timing mark, the slack of the timing chain and confirm again with a rod down the #1 cylinder that it's at TDC.

actually i see the problem, in the smaller photo the cam timing arrow is pointing to 11 o'clock istead of 12. you need to move one or more link on the crank.

thanks Tom, everything lined up beautifully now just to figure the wiring to the starter from the wiring loom, bloody sticky tape with writing fell off

So what was the problem?

I was gonna say the cams probably just shifted a little bit, I dont think they usaually will just "sit" where they should be. I was thinking you could just rotate the sprocket a little bit, as that space is to advance/retard the cams.

Joe, ended up double checking TDC on cams and crank, then moved sprockets as suggested, all is great, thanks for your advice, you couldn't tell me which plug the left and right knock sensors plug into on the engine loom (4 ports) Serge.

Im pretty sure the #1 KS (closest to front of engine) goes in the 3rd slot down, and the #2 goes in the bottom.

You can double check by seeing which way the memory of the wire wants to lay, thats what I did the first time. There should be a slight loop to each one.

Hey Joe, I'm still a tad confused I have figured out that the top one is the camshaft position sensor, second from top is the crank sensor, and obviously the two bottom are for the knock sensors but which is which? I don't want to put the manifolds back on and start the car just to find out I gotta rip it all apart again (gaskets here in Australia are very rare and pelican parts postage cost is a killer) Serge.

The site is not letting me upload the pics but Joe is right. The sensor closet to the radiator goes in hole 3 and the one nearest the cabin goes in hole 4 at the bottom.
