OK, I found out that i have a M42 and I am having mixed feelings about keeping it or not.  I really want a Touring but I have owned several E30s in my life so who knows.  What i am trying to figure out is if my car is worth keeping and other than the interior and 4cylinder engine, what makes the m42any better or more desirable than any other E30?  I have read a few things like dual overhead cams etc.

Below is a link to my craigslist ad for the car just to show you guys some pics because i am at work and cannot post pics from here.  This is not a ploy to sell the car or I would have put it in the for sale section but just a few pics to get the "guru's" advice.

It's a nice car, well worth it for the fun.  It's not as fast as many other new models, but it has a certain 'feel' to it that many newer cars don't have (might be worn ball joints:D).  It isn't as refined as newer cars, and it's not very powerful either.  If you're not 100% sure about it, sell it.  I'm glad you decided to post it here.  I'd bet most of the M42s here were bought off CL.

I agree with you about the touring...I'd absolutely get one just for the novelty.  I'm not sure how I'd feel about a few hundred pounds of wagon on the rear end.

It's also likely that BMW will never make another car like this one...like the 2002, it'll never happen again.  Might never be a collector's car, but it's been worth every penny to me.

Thanks Dave.  The more I think, the more I want to keep it. It is very much road worthy and a daily driver now but it honestly wouldn't take much to make it a very nice car.

They're hard to find without rust too...especially up here in the rust belt.  They do need a lot of time for maintenance...but we're here to help out.

Or maybe keep it until the economy improves and sell it to someone with a midlife crisis?

They do make great DDs, just keep up on the maintenance and replace all the rubber bits.  Maybe reward her with a timing chain and an R134 upgrade if she's really a keeper.
