Where'd you get an M40?  They were never in the states.

not sure where you got this info from but e30 m3's were most certainly imported into the U.S. and they all came equipped with s14's.

are you sure its an m40? can you post pics?

dude,im 90% sure its a m40,i dont think its a m10,deff. not a m42. its a single cam for sure. when my wife gest back with the camera i will post pics, shes at some stupid crafting event today in morgantown.   as far as i was aware s14's were not imported into the us. but i could be verry well wrong. my 85 m3 had a s14. thats where the s14 block, crank and head ive got came from.

S14s came in every M3 in the states.  Your M3 wasn't an '85 either.

The S14 only came in the E30 M3, though there was a 2.0 liter version in an standard-bodied Italian E30  (320 sport or some such) due to ridiculous import tariffs on >2.0l cars. It was not sold outside Italy.
The E30 M3 was first sold in Europe in 87, and in the US in 88.
ALL US (and most other countries) E30 318i in 84 & 85 had the single cam M10b18 engine. ALL US E30 318i/is/ic from 90 on had the M42b18 engine (B18 = 1.8l). The E36 started with the M42, then M44. The M40 was never imported to the US in any car, though there are probably a few here through gray market import. I don't believe that any other M4x ever made it here, but don't quote me on that.
The S14 and M4x engines were ALL twin cam. Both were derivatives of (don't read this to mean same as) the legendary 1200 hp formula 1 qualifying engine, which in turn was built around a stock (and used) M10(IIRC) block, though heavily massaged.
So, if you believe that you have an 85 M anything or single cam M4x engine, you're mistaken, delusional, on crack, or just plain messing with us. The only ///M cars prior to the E30 M3 were the M1, M635 and M535i.

If someone on told you that S14s were never imported, they were either remarkably uninformed or yanking your chain. If you really do have an S14 that isn't damaged or cracked, sell it and you can easily buy a nice M42 car or two if it's a low mileage engine...

Just so you don't have to say it, yes, I'm a total prick, too. Sometimes I think I'm loosing my edge, but my wife, bless her heart, says that I'm still an asshole.

ive seen a m40 here.

you'll know its a m40 if the intake manifold looks almost like a m42, but the valve cover looks like a m10.

As an umpire once told me: "if you don't know the rules when you come out here, you just look stupid."

M40s as well as M43s ARE SOHC engines. Google it.
