My aunt, who owned the car from new, decided to stop driving the car and let it sit in a driveway for about 6 years. I towed it off and restored it free of charge for her! :)

I chose it, i was looking for something rear wheel drive, something that not everyone had, something that handled well, something European, Those brought me down to  Porsche and BMW, then i started to look at prices for the car, parts, and upgrades/modifications, Then it was down to 944 928 325 318is, decided the BMW would be the best option, Then i started to look at standard equipment/ necessities. I also looked at the engine and construction of it ex: timing chain or belt, exhaust manifold or header etc. I decided the 318is was a no bullshit car and bought one soon after

I chose it because 10 years ago an M42 cabrio was substantially lower retail than a 6 cyl, and insurance was also notably less expensive. Combine that with the low option package [something I like], better fuel economy, and much more lively of an engine than the 6 and for me it was a winner.

I think the M42 is one of the best powerplants to come out of bmw during the era [other than the S14]

My first one chose me...I had been out looking for a first car, and it was the first clean vehicle with a decent price I came across so I took it.  I knew nothing of cars, nor did I care at that point...I was a 16 year old who just wanted a car to get around in.

Now I am 25, and after wrecking the first one 3 years ago, I had to have another.  So, I chose the second one.  I credit my choice to study engineering in college to my first car haha.

I needed something to do.  Was looking for a project car, and this one had a "brake problem" as well as having been painted twice with two-stage paint, front and rear of the car.  So parts were red and parts were pink lol.  ds rear door was stuck shut (seized lock actuator).  It had a brand-new rack though.  And after purchase I discovered that it had nearly complete documented service history as well.

Braking problem turned out to be a shoe retaining pin had broken loose from the backing plate in one of the parking brake assemblies -- made a helluva racket lol.  Paint and bodywork cost me a bit of my time and elbow grease but no money due to my connections (:D).  It's been a good little car -- we've put 18k miles on it in the two years since purchase.  No problems.  Lots of maintenance though.  And lots more to do.
