I have a 2002 project coming up this spring/summer and am pondering engine choices. 200HP is the goal for what ever engine.

S14 is prime consideration but for the $$'s the M42 might be the better choice.

$4500 budget.

Cannot afford both a engine rebuild and turbo both so thats out. N/A is the only way.

Anyone make a ITB kit?

No emissions restrictions so big nasty cams can be considered.

You can rebuild and turbo an M42 for 4500 I would think.

Even after my engine management my budget will be at ~2000 dollars for just the turbo set up.

On car that doesn't have to meet california emissions (pre 75), you could definitely turbo the M42 for less than $4500. 200hp NA would be much more expensive in my opinion. Definitely not possible without a rebuild.

Also not going to boost a non-rebuilt M42 either.

MM pistons and Rally cams with some other assorted goodies would be about $2k. That leaves about 2k to rebuild the rest of the engine.

Or its back to the original plan of a used S14 install.

It would be WAY harder to get 200hp N/A out of an M42 than with boost.

Running 7psi on my 160k mile stock motor I have like 205 at the crank.

How about supercharging it instead?

Btw, 200HP NA is going to be expensive compared to supercharge or turbo. Look at the MM rally engine and its power its producing. If you are going to get 200HP, you have to do something similar and I don't think 4.5K will be enough.

doesn't supercharging/turbocharging kill gas mileage, and wear on the motor compared to N/A though?

What people don't understand is that you can't build a motor for both longevity and performance.

Its one or the other.

But the answer to your question is yes.

As for the ITB kits, there's Dbilas and GT Technic. It's $$$ as with everything else in this hobby.

I think 200HP is definitely achievable. Upping the compression to 12-12.5:1, maybe boring the cyl to 86mm if possible (I think MM might have cyl sleeves available), an MM cyl head with aggressive cams and probably the most important and possibly most expensive part...having someone with lots of experience tune it.
