After entering maximum bids of $50 for three of these on ebay, all with some minor flaw, I broke down and bought a new one from RM European. $88 at my front door. Nice and shiny new with feel good leather. It lights the shift pattern and works with the dash light dimmer. I did not tell my wife!

Wouldn't it have just been cheaper to do an illumination mod?

yes it deff would.  To be honest though I doubt it would come out even close to being as nice as these stock pieces.  But I've never tried so idk.

I'm diggin it  D.  Someday I will own one too.  I saw a write up on DIY illuminated shift knob, and IMHO it looked like stink on a stick.

They are in realoem.com. I don't know if there's one without the "M". The shiny last half of the "M" in the photo is a reflection.
As to photos not showing up, it is on the M42 Club's server:

Installation?
« Reply #12 on: September 13, 2008, 05:22:44 PM »
Just curious for those who have bought this illuminated shifter...how exactly did you install it?  (i.e., cut off the black connector and wire it somehow to the lighter?)....unfortunatly there weren't any instructions that came with it...I did read through that DIY mentioned above, but it wasn't of much help....thanks for any insight!

whoops, nevermind...I got it figured out...

for future ref...I ended up using the light bulb wires from the rear ashtray.  The wires are an exact match...just cut off the black plastic connnector from the shift knob and the connector from the rear ash tray and splice them together.

I got the exact same one as above (with the M badge)...the M thing kinda bugged me too, but oh well...works like a charm...kinda nice that it only lights up when the headlights are turned on too...I ended up payin $87 shipped...to me it was definitely worth it...not having one that lights up had been buggin me for months every time I came to a stoplight...it's a nice touch.

It's neat that an illuminated shift knob exists - but as others have said, I'll keep my $80+ in my pocket...  I can shift in the dark without having to look at an illuminated shift pattern...  :)
