e30/e36/euro m3 general discussion
« on: July 24, 2008, 05:01:50 AM »
hey guys,
not sure if this is the best place for this, but wanted to get some discussion and peoples' thoughts on this! I currently run a 2.1 e30 318is with nearly 200hp, koni shocks, eibach arbs, m3 cabs, lsd and a few other toys. I have a new improved bottom end to go in soon, and I'm facing a bit of a predicament. Choices are:
1) keep the e30 and fit new engine
2) drop new engine into an e36 coupe shell
3) sell up and buy euro m3 3l
I use the car for town and motorway driving, and do a few track days, the car also gets 'ring'd. So I need an all-rounder that can cut it as a daily driven car but also cope on track. I've been really happy with the e30, especially on track, but I think that an e36, despite the weight deficit, may handle better, have better brakes, and be more refined on the road. I've really enjoyed the e36 4 pots I've driven. Other option of course is just to get a euro m3, much more powerful, great noise etc.
Anyone got any hands-on experience of track driving both e36 and e30 cars? anyone know why a late m44 e36 weighs 1335kgs compared to an early m42 1240kg?  4 pots have big advantages in terms of cost, I have a 4 pot LPG kit on my e30 that I can fit to any other 4 pot car, insurance is cheaper etc, but the m3 certainly has its appeal and they're very cheap here right now and thus really unlikely to depreciate at all. I've never driven an e36 on track, but on the road they feel good, esp a m44 318is I did some work on (new suspension, engine mods etc) a while back.
