I just fired my rebulid and i hear bad things
« on: July 04, 2008, 12:18:07 AM »
Anyway, I have a LOUD ticking from the motor. Everything and I mean everything is new. How long does it take for the lifters to fill up? Also, is there some procedure I am missing on first fire up? It sounds like either the lifters, chain or valve(s). I'm not sure yet.

Typically I jumper the starter pins and crank the engine over for about 30 seconds. This ensures I have full oil pressure to all areas of the engine. After that I fire it up and bring it to about 2000 rpm for about 15 minutes checking coolant temp and for any leaks.

The last engine I did I got a pretty decent lifter tick but it went away after the first 5 minutes.

When you say everything is new is this also including the lifters?

Did you pre-oil the engine as described above?

You even replaced the $110 idler gear for the chain? (Can't believe that little bastard cost that much.

Do you have pictures of the build up. Also if you can post a video of the sound you describe that would be very helpful.

Well i dead started it to ensure oil pressure. I didn't run it at 2k for 15. I drove it 7 miles under 3 grand. The lifters are new as well as the idler gear (the one off the crank right?) I do have pics at r3v. I am going out of town right now (not in this car) so i'll post pics on Tuesday. I have video, but my dumb ass iPhone won't transfer to my PC. I'll find another way. Thanks peerless.

The idler gear that peerless was talking about, is the one that sits in between the crank gear and the chain tensioner guide. It's most likely the lifters or injectors but lifters are louder. I seen alot of places use a running in oil, this may help, then after 1000km, they change the oil to the correct one. eg Mobil 1 5W/50

well, as of right now, i have no way to post any video with the sound. bummer. i know it's not the injectors. way too loud for that. the tensioner is new so i don't quite understand how it could make that noise. the one thing i didn't do was soak the lifters in oil before install. so they went in dry. if any one is interested, i can give you a call and let you listen to the noise.

oh yeah, i almost forgot. i have a pretty aggressive custom cam set up and the intake is a little advanced. so that may be the cause as well.

Lifters take about 20-40 minutes to settle.

I'm starting to think that is what it was. I have about 36 miles on the motor now and the noise has disappeared. I was concerned because that is the loudest lifter tick i have ever heard. but it appears to be worked out now.

Thank you all for you input.

Thats good to hear. I had one recently I rebuilt and one lifter clattered for about 10 minutes. I was a bit worried but it all worked itself out in the end.
