Cracked Exhaust Manifold
« on: June 02, 2008, 06:51:34 AM »
Hi, just wondering what does a cracked exhaust manifold sound like on the M42 engine in terms of inside the cabin and standing in front of the engine bay. And has anyone experienced it on their car?

Thanks

Usually with a cracked manifold if standing outside of the car (or when driving it), when the engine is accelerated, you will hear a distinct exhaust leak.  Depending on how big the crack is, the exhaust leak can be loud.  It may also sometimes sound like a "raspy ticking" noise - but again, it's dependent upon how big or small the crack is on the manifold.  The exhaust leak noise coming from a cracked manifold will also increase w/ engine RPM's while driving.

It's definitely a distinct and audible (annoying) noise.  Pop your hood and with the engine running, grab the throttle, increase the engine RPM's and try and pinpoint where the noise may be coming from within the engine bay.

I recently suffered a cracked exhaust manifold on my e36.

I am able to hear a loud ticking noise that varies with throttle. Harder throttle = louder noise. There will also be a popping noise (as if air is leaking out from a pipe) when I open the hood.

Thanks guys, I have got a cracked manifold for sure. I can here that loud ticking sound from inside the car. Since my car is RHD, it is more audible on that side.
