Camshaft Specifications?
« on: May 18, 2008, 01:48:50 AM »
I was hoping to gain some information regarding the stock cam specs for both the E30 and E36 engines.

The main reason for wanting this information is that I am building a engine with a custom grind intake cam from Web Cams here locally in CA.

The engine in question is a M42 from a 93' E36 and featured the DISA intake system. We are using the E36 engine complete including both cams. (Minus DISA) When the cam was sent out it was ground for the vehicle application of 91-92 M42.

The cylinder head is stamped 92' on the back. I have heard the stock E36 cam is 'hotter' then the E30 cam. So I am hoping to find out the specs so that I can compare them to the specs we where given with the camshaft.

Here are the specs we received with the custom grind cam.
91-92 M42 intake cam
Grind #571
Valve lift .389" (9.88mm)
Duration 223*
Duration @ .050" (1.27mm) 206*
Lobe Centerline 110*
Intake Opens -7* BTDC
Intake Closes 33* ATDC

How does this compare with E30 and E36 stock intake cams?

Thanks for your help on this one.

I measured e30 and E36 camshafts side by side for lift and they were identical. I did not have equipment to measure complete profile unfortunately. As far as I know, they are practically identical. Lift is same and I could not differentiate them by naked eye by looking the cam profile so there should not be significant differences.

If Shrick cam has about 20 degrees more duration and 1 mm more lift and they give 15 hp more, practically (or truly) identical stock camshafts are not going give anywhere near that 15 hp.
