I'm guessing he said you may have a leak at your CRANKSHAFT.  There's a front and rear crank seal, and these do tend to seep some oil with age.  The radiator fan tends to blow that all over the place making things look a whole lot worse.

If your cams are leaking, you've got a lot more problems!  :p

You can buy a whole new lower oil pan and gasket for $100 from Bavarian Autosport.  There's nothing difficult about replacing the pan yourself.  It's just time consuming.

when I replaced my last oil pan I used a thick bead of "the right stuff" instead of a gasket.  You can get it at autozone and it works great!

yea he said he'd have to remove and replace the pan before he could tell if there are other leaks...me and my dad took a look and it looks like the front seal on the cam is leaking... so i'm looking at a costly out of pocket expense... but at least the mechanic is gonna clean out and spray my whole engine down...not that it needs it...

he said $165 for the whole thing, but he was a dumbass and said it was for a m10 e36... WTF? i'm gonna check out a friend of mine's shot and get a quote too...

nope...doesn't offer credit...

I will warn against using this as it can get into your oil and clog up your oil pickup screen.  We used some similar stuff that is safe to use on oil pans when replacing mine.

I'm still confused how your cam is leaking?  Anyone else confused or is it just me?

Is it maybe your crank seal that's leaking?

Oil pan leak, make sure it's not your gasket. With the mileage on your car, that could be all it is.
If it is indeed cracked, I think there are 2 m42s being parted out so you can source a used pan to save some money. Depending on where the crack is, u can also use JB-Weld.

As for the camshaft leak
Once again, with the age and mileage on your car, make sure it's not your valve cover gasket that's leaking.

Investigate and verify the leaks before having the guy fix it. I would personally run away from someone who confidently mentioned m10 e36

Good luck.

281,xxx miles... it is cracked, you can see it, but there is A LOT of fluid dripping...so it cant just be that crack... the  crack is a hairline crack that is maybe 3" long along the front of the pan...

idk either...i gotta go get it check out tomorrow.... could fix a gasket or JB weld work for that crack?
