I am in the process of a complete rebuild. Oil pump went south. Just got the head back - new guides new seats and reground. I have the head together and now am wondering the best way to position cams at tdc (or near) before installing the head and gears.

You can't install the cam before you install the head. You won't be able to torque the head down.
After you install the head, install the cam guide with lifters. Then put the cams in. Refer to the other post for direction.
