Hi guys,

I'm trying to swap my cross-drilled rotors onto my car, but of course I have to take off the old disk. All I did on the other car is relase the emergency brake and it pretty much came right off. I did the same with this car and it isn't budging (sp?). I need some help if anyone has ever encountered this. I think it may possibly be that the e-brake pad is stuck in the shoe, but also the bearing nut and the disk/hub in general is pretty corroded.

First of all RTFM

Therie is a hole in the brake disc. Through that hole you can turn nut with small screw driver part 7 http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/318is-M42/ECE/L/M/1990/04/mg-34/ill-34_0330/. It is almost imposible

On the brake disc guard from the inside you should turn two small pins 90 deg, witch holds brake shoes http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/318is-M42/ECE/L/M/1990/04/mg-34/ill-34_0330/ part 11. Release emrg. brake cable nuts part 11 near the near emerg. brake lever. http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/318is-M42/ECE/L/M/1990/04/mg-34/ill-34_0344/

Does it budge at all? If so, then it could just be hung up on the shoes. It happened ot me a couple times. Yanking like a crazyman worked once. The second time I pulled the e-brake boot and loosened up the cables and then pulled like a crazyman.

If it does not bodge at all, then umm check to make sure you removed the allen screw holding it on? A rubber mallet is usually good to have around too in case you need to break some rust/corrosion.

Are you able to rotate the rotor freely with the tire off? (I assume you have the rotor retaining screw off as well?)

Put the wheel back on - thread 2 lug bolts - can it now spin? Kinda tug at the wheel to free it a bit then take the lug bolts out and pull the rotor off..

It might just be seized on there. A couple of taps with a mallet or BFh might be all you need.

Firstly... no I didn't remove the retainer bolt. (just kidding. That's one thing I made sure of (I know, just checking all the possibilities)). It rotates freely, but does not wiggle at all.

I'll try the wheel idea when I get home. I also did have a metal mallet (3 pound sledge).

BMWman91 - what boot are you talking about loosening?

i had the same problem until i hit the old rotors with a hammer then it droped and hit me in the foot lol so be careful ....

Bet that's the face you were making afterward because you were happy yoy got the disk off there but whincing from the foot. I've banged the crap out of the back of the disk... NOTHING. Don't know what to do next. Have thought about putting the old pads back on, taking it to my mechanic and have him swap to the new pads after he puts the rotor on.

Can you take a pic of the rotor/axle in question?

Do you have spacers or centering rings? They can get stuck on the hub preventing the rotor from coming off.

The only other thing that would hold it is the e-brake shoe collapsing. You will have noticed some odd noises for sure though.

Hit it with moderate force with a heavy hammer while you rotate it. Have patience and keep doing it, might take a few minutes to break it loose. Just took the original factory rear disks off a 95 accord, they were on there good too.

Wear safety glasses while you're working by they way, cast iron can shatter when you bang on it.

dont hit from the back, take a sledge hammer (with a short handle) and some "rust-off" and wack it in between the wheel studs (not the center of the wheel but the center of each stud)......if your aim sucks with a hammer than dont try this otherwise you will damage your studs. good luck.
