Light colored smoke and pinging!
« on: July 27, 2007, 11:19:09 AM »
As usual I get the unusual problems. I have a Mark D chip in my car -I originally got a 91 octane chip and the car pinged pretty bad in all gears so I got a detuned one that only pings above 5500rpm or so in 3rd and 4th near or at full throttle, but not at 0-80% throttle. My car also uses a quart of 20-50 oil every 3000 miles or so. The engine has 155K miles and has been on Redline  20W50 for the last 20K of its life... Prior to that is was owned by an old lady who probably used dino oil as she also used 89 octane to save money!!! Everything else in the drivetrain is stock.

Last night as I was accelerating hard, I noticed huge clouds of whitish smoke (not steam) coming out of the exhaust above 6000rpm whenever the car pinged. When there was no pinging there was no smoke. When there was smoke pinging was pretty bad!

So, is the pinging causing the white smoke or is oil burning in the cylinder causing the pinging? If so, is this a bottom end problem or a valve train problem? Why is it intermittent? Time for a rebuild? I am ignorant! Help!

Thanks,
Narayan
