output shaft rebuild? possible
« on: October 16, 2007, 01:53:56 PM »
both my output shaft outer boots are cracked and the inners are on the way out.  Im wondering if its possible to rebuild them.  These bitches cost like $400 a piece

I checked them and there is no play so maybe I dont need a rebuild but maybe clean them out and repack them.  then put new boots on.

anyone do this yet?
The devil made me do it

that is normally how they are rebuilt, just a boot replacement and repacking.  If you see any wear on the surfaces the balls roll on it might need to be replaced.  Most of the time its just new boots/grease.

.....you must be talking about the rear axles (not output shaft). you could get boot kits that come with everything from the clamps to the grease.

ps. mine have been cracked (not leaking yet) ever since i got the car 4 years ago and im not going to replace them untill they crack. the old rubber bmw used to use on our cars is WAY better quality than the new boots you get in the kit. i suggest you wait untill one starts leaking grease, the should last another couple of years (even if they are cracked) depending on how bad they are......just my 2 cents....:)
