this is like, the getrag 265(?) vs. the 240?? would it work with a swapped bell-housing?

the hot setup is like... that 'dogleg' close ratio 5 speed...

that's the plan! do you not have the dogleg box on the US s14? I have no idea about what bellhousing might work with this etc.
and yeah the s14 dogleg box is getrag 265.
I've heard of people using different boxes on the m42 but not sure what bellhousings etc.
Anyone any ideas?!
if i were to do it i'd need a new diff and prop too i'd imagine, but it's got to be worth the effort if it can be done.

we had the dogleg tranny, but its a VERY rare item..

whats the advantage?.....what are the gear ratio's on the 265? you know a 6th speed on our cars would be nice, along W/ a 4.27 diff. (then 6th would be like under 3k rpms at 70mph, and you would have better acceleration.)

If only! I dont think the bell hosings would work. Since its a two peice trans [bell housing spereate from gear box] you may be able to mix and match to find the correct set up. I know the 265's will fit M30's, from there you may be able to hunt down a bell housing [euro 520's.. dunno what trans layout they ahve but its a starting point] yes, 520's are not M30 motors, but same chassis might use the same practices ect.

I'm sure if you know a good machine shop you could have one made, or atleast the setup to make them bolt up. I've seen it done between ford and chevy's since they dont mate up at all. My personal bet goes towards a good reputable machine shop and giving them the dimensions and where it all needs to be and possibly the old one to go for what it needs to look like them custom building one to match the one you gave them but in the different pattern. My grandpa did it w/ a 327 chevy and a jeep transmission so I know it cna be done, and he blew up the transmission before he cracked the bellhousing.

The most realistic way of getting a CR box mated to a m42 would be to use a e21 323i tranny.

suggests that m50 gearboxes fit the M42. can anyone confirm?
If this is the case, then an S14 box could be made to fit. another interesting option could be the 6 speed s50b32 gearbox, i have no idea if this gearbox bolts to an s50b30, and if it does, if it will bolt to an m50, and in turn fit to an m42.
phew. i need some concrete info, i really don't now what i'm talking about.

As I understand it M40/42/50/52 are interchangeable transmissions

M20 transes have the same bolt pattern but the angle is off,
and maybe not, who knows

I am with Gunni on this, only disclaimer is that I have not personally seen it nor tried it but have heard from a reputable source that the m42 tranny bolts to the m50. As to what the maximum power rating is....I dunno :confused: do you guys know :p ?

i reckon the 6 speed evo box would be a good option, they're also pretty cheap over here. with a fairly short diff ratio, a 1:1 fifth etc it'll be the best of both - 5 close gears, and an overdrive 6th. will keep a look-out for what turns up over the summer i reckon. have enough to be getting on with for now without changing gearboxes. would be nice to know if it would fit though

The 240 is designed for up to 270Nm. So it should be alright for your application. As far as I know, the gears don't break easily on these boxes. It's only the bearings that wear faster under very aggressive use. And the synchro rings (?).
