318ti M42 budget supercharger build
« on: September 20, 2019, 10:30:58 AM »
Hello all! Anyone interested in a budget supercharger build that actually will be finished? ;D
I have a TI with a freshly rebuilt M42 engine that I am gonna be supercharging this winter, and would like to bring you all in on the journey.
The engine is pretty much stock atm besides a catback exhaust and a generic ebay chip, however it still made 146WHP on the dyno as of now.

Anyways the plan for the build is as follows.

SUPERCHARGER:
I will be running a AMR500 supercharger mounting it with a kit supplied from Hyde Motor Works.
Goal will be to run around 5-7psi, hopefully bumping the power some 30-50 horses.

ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN UPGRADES?
Plan is to run the engine and drivetrain bone stock with no additional upgrades. This means stock internals, stock fuel system, stock clutch etc etc.

TUNING:
I am going to be using the Ostrich 2.0 emulator and TunerPro. This means i will be able to modify the original map instead of making one completely myself.
I will also be installing a wideband gauge as well as a boost gauge. I might also install some sort of temp gauge for the inlet manifold (IAT).

ADDITIONAL:
To release the pressure created from the supercharger when shifting gears or just cruising I am planning on running a stock VAG 1.8T BPV (bypass valve).

Most of the parts has been ordered so I am just waiting for them to come in.
I will try to make a separate guide covering eveything from installing the parts to tuning the engine.

Stay tuned.

Hey....Glad you have a nice fresh rebuild but I would not drive that car with that chip in it. Just my $.02

You are running so lean and that's why you're making power. A stock rebuild will not make an extra 35-40HP at the crank without any upgrades. Sorry.

You're running 15AFR and dip to 14 and then back up to 15 when you're making power. That is a total Kaboom before you even get started!!

Cheers,
~Ralph

Thanks for the tip. I was not aware of the car running so lean before taking it to the dyno, but it has been running without issues for almost a year of trackdays so I guess its not that bad (hopefully).
Anyways, I will be tuning the car with the supercharger installed so that shouldnt be an issue :)

Hi, m44 owner (z3), have ordered hyde amr500 kit as well. I don't know if they've shipped any, mine won't arrive till end of may. Have you made any progress?
