95 E36 M42 in E21 -- DME and EMS considerations
« on: July 14, 2017, 09:17:43 PM »
I've been performing an engine swap in my 78 320i.  Project entailed a complete rebuild of the M42.

I thought the key for selecting an M42 was ensuring it was an M42 with OBD1... but it turns out starting 95, a complicated anti-theft device, EWS, was being implemented.

My car is a 7-95 production which means its EWS2.

I feel like I have 2 options, was hoping someone could verify.
1)  Utilize a tuner chip that couples EWS delete tech:

2) Purchase a 92-94 DME

Number 2 would be waaaay cheaper and I could even have room to find a Dinan chip or something.

I reviewed the Electronic Troubleshooting Manual, and as expected, its the same connector (x6000) and the only difference is the EWS wire going from the ECU.

What is the ECU number on the sticker? i.e. 0 261 200 175
